Those who see black and white floral patterns suffer from this condition due to long-standing lateral or frontal headaches, representing a solid excess pattern of internal cataract (internal eye disease). At the onset, vision is slightly blurred; gradually, one perceives black spots in the air, resembling hanging ants, suspended pearls, flying flies, or dancing butterflies, as well as silver nails, silver threads, or mercury beads, continuous and unbroken; shapes like brooms, nets, or dust on roofs forming several unbroken lines; or like chaff winnowed in the wind, with dust falling from the sky, forming fixed black and white floral patterns. The eyeball becomes unstable, appearing larger when viewed from afar and smaller up close. If neglected for a long time, opacity (cataract) covers the pupil, blocking sunlight. It is appropriate to use Sun Simiao’s blowing and flushing method to remove the opacity condensed in the Liver and Lung meridians before applying tonification. Blindly administering drugs for dispelling wind and clearing heat, or nourishing Kidney water, will yield no effect. External application is not indicated unless there is an external nebula.
Some individuals perceive "divine light" spontaneously, seeing flashes like lightning or bright flames and rosy clouds in front of their eyes, which come and go intermittently. This differs from gazing at fixed colored objects. This condition arises from the deficiency of Yin essence, causing solitary Yang to fly away, leading to the dissipation of divine light; if prolonged, it results in blindness. Treatment should focus on nourishing Kidney water and calming the Heart spirit. When fire does not move recklessly, the light will naturally subside. One may take Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia Root) and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), each 2 qian; Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), each 1.5 qian; Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), 30 grains; and Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), 0.6 fen. Decoct in water and take warm on an empty stomach. External application is not indicated.
This symptom refers to suddenly seeing firelight upon opening the eyes at night, resembling lamp wicks or incense tips, appearing intermittently with a chaotic golden hue. This is caused by insufficient Kidney water and deficient fire flaming upward, resulting in disordered and unsettled divine light in the eyes. One should take Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) according to the original dosage, adding Liao Wu Wei Zi (Liaoning Schisandra Berry), dried and roasted, 1.5 liang, and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), peeled and not directly scorched, 1 liang. Form into honey pills the size of Torreya seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with salt water on an empty stomach. External application is not indicated.
Shen Gao (Divine Paste) is the substance contained within the lens that encompasses the pupil. It has several layers of hard shell externally, is crisp internally, and contains a cavity of thick, dark Divine Paste.
Shen Shui (Divine Water) originates from the San Jiao (Triple Burner) and is transformed from the primordial Qi of Heaven and Earth; it is invisible within the eye.
Shen Guang (Divine Light) is the essence of vision within the eye, originating from the Ming Men (Gate of Life), connecting to the Gallbladder, issuing from the Heart, and functioning through Fire.
Zhen Xue (True Blood) is the light and clear blood ascended from the Liver to the eyes, which nourishes the ocular collaterals.
Zhen Qi (True Qi) is the dynamic Qi circulating within the ocular collaterals, representing the primal Yang derived from the source of primordial Qi.
Zhen Jing (True Essence) is the refined fluid transformed from the Yuan Qi of both congenital and acquired sources. It begins in the Kidney, spreads to the Gallbladder, and finally reaches the pupil.
All these substances serve to moisten the eye's fluids. In youth and vigor, these ocular fluids are abundant, resulting in clear vision; in old age, they diminish, leading to dim vision. Often, practitioners cause harm by needling until bleeding occurs. How can they know what Shen Gao, Shen Shui, Shen Guang, Zhen Xue, Zhen Qi, and Zhen Jing are? Fools accept this without understanding; truly lamentable!
