Chen Shiduo stated: The term "specific treatment" (Zhuan Zhi) refers to treating a specific organ directly, akin to a single blade piercing straight in. For instance, when a person suffers from a cold syndrome where cold pathogenic factors directly invade the Yin meridians, the condition progresses rapidly like a galloping horse and cannot be restrained. If one were to disperse medicinal forces to various parts like mobilizing troops on different fronts, the efficacy would likely hesitate and fail to rescue the main pathology urgently. It is better to use only one or two principal herbs to break through barriers and advance directly into the disease site. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 2 qian, decocted in water and taken orally for recovery. This formula is named Shen Fu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction). Its application possesses profound rationale. Since cold pathogens directly enter the Kidney, the Sovereign (Heart) faces external peril, the citizens (Healthy Qi) flee, and the thieves (Cold Pathogens) drive the entire population of the city to become bandits, attacking upwards towards the Imperial Pool (Heart), their momentum being irresistible. At this moment, if one summons troops from neighboring counties, it will be too slow to be effective; thus, it is preferable to command the existing army, appoint a great general, and entrust all military power to them, ordering them to fight bravely at the forefront, break out, charge in, slaughter and eliminate the enemy, thereby securing the city and bringing joy to the people, causing the vanguard to turn their weapons around and pursue the thieves. In the formula, Fu Zi acts like the great general, while Ren Shen acts like the soldiers and horses. The body is like a city wall, and medicines can be observed through this analogy; life and death are similar, making it a sufficient metaphor. May people ponder deeply and naturally comprehend this method of specific treatment.
Master Zhang said: The method of specific treatment belongs to the category of cold pathogens directly invading the Yin meridians, which is quite reasonable. However, the category of "direct invasion" is not exhausted by a single formula. I transmit a perspective that allows for comprehensive observation, ensuring no therapeutic methods are omitted in treatment.
Master Hua said: I also agree with this transmission, but I have additional methods. For example, when a person suffers from heatstroke, presenting with thirst and an urge to drink, the situation is also very urgent. If one attempts to treat slowly and dispersively, the summer-heat pathogen will not easily dissipate. One should use one or two summer-clearing herbs to directly expel the pathogen, so that the Heart Sovereign may achieve peace. The method involves using Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang, Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) 2 liang, Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) 3 qian, and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 5 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Commentary: Qing Shu Shen Dan / Divine Elixir for Clearing Summer-Heat.) The brilliance of this formula lies in using Ren Shen to consolidate the Original Qi, allowing Qing Hao to then scatter the pathogen. Although Qing Hao alone can clear summer-heat, seemingly without need for Ren Shen's assistance, clearing heat without tonifying Qi means that although the heat is cleared, the person will inevitably become weak. Only when used together with Ren Shen is there a way to tonify healthy Qi amidst expelling pathogens; the summer-heat scatters without depleting True Qi, naturally achieving results as swiftly as an echo. Furthermore, the formula contains Bai Zhu to strengthen the Spleen and Xiang Ru to chase away heat, making their use highly appropriate.
