Discussion on Fetal Suspension, Discussion on Threatened Abortion with Bleeding, Discussion on Treating Fetal Restlessness, Discussion on Breech and Transverse Presentation, with Appendices: Prenatal and Postnatal Golden Pill (Taichan Jindan) and Life-Returning Pill (Huisheng Dan).
The Heavenly Master said: For prenatal conditions, treat them according to the methods of their respective categories. Among these, Fetal Suspension (Zixuan) is the most difficult to treat, followed by Threatened Abortion with Bleeding (Loutai), then Fetal Restlessness (Taidong). The most terrifying and difficult to manage is Breech and Transverse Presentation (Hengsheng Daoyang), which must be studied urgently. Fetal Suspension occurs when fetal heat causes the fetus to be restless; the body desires to stand up within the uterus (Baogong), creating an appearance as if suspended in the air. In reality, the fetus cannot truly suspend itself. If treated as an excess condition of Qi and attacked with purgatives, death will occur immediately. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 2 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 5 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 2 qian, Bai Shao (White Peony Root) 5 qian, Huang Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) 3 qian, Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) 1 qian, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 1 liang, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) 3 qian, Dang Gui Shen (Danggui Body) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. This formula consists entirely of sacred herbs that benefit the waist and umbilical region. By adding a small amount of Huang Qin to clear heat, the fetus receives cooling energy and naturally settles. Chen Shi Duo believes this formula has more nourishing properties than cooling ones, yet it contains profound meaning for stabilizing critical changes. Generally, the fetus is anchored between the waist and kidneys, while the uterus connects at the intersection of the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). Since these herbs enter the interior meridians directly, they strengthen the root and secure the foundation, making it impossible for the fetus to move even if it wishes to. Moreover, with herbs that cool the fetus, how could there be any unrest?
Next is Threatened Abortion with Bleeding (Loutai), caused by deficiency of Qi and Blood. It requires urgent and vigorous tonification to stop the bleeding. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 2 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 5 qian, Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) 1 qian, Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) 1 qian, Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) 2 qian, Dang Gui Shen (Danggui Body) 1 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 2 qian, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 5 qian, Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 2 qian, Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) 0.5 fen, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) 2 qian, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. This formula is neither cold nor hot; it is a sacred herb for calming the fetus. For any case of fetal instability, this formula calms the fetus with miraculous effect. Fetal restlessness is caused by excessive sexual activity. By tonifying Qi and Blood here, calmness is naturally achieved, preventing threatened abortion with bleeding.
Fetal Restlessness (Taidong) is a sign of Threatened Abortion with Bleeding and should also be treated with this formula, yielding miraculous results without exception.
Difficult labor, such as breech or transverse presentation, leads to death within moments. Without emergency rescue methods, how can one become a divine physician? However, fetal malposition is due to deficiency of Blood and Qi. When Blood and Qi are deficient, the fetus lacks strength and often cannot turn its head, resulting in hands or feet presenting first. If limbs present first, pricking the fetal limbs with needles will cause them to retract in fright. Urgently administer Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 3 liang, Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome) 2 liang, Hong Hua (Safflower Flower) 3 qian, and灌服 (force-feed) immediately. (Annotation: Zhuan Tou Dan / Head-Turning Pill.) After a short while, the fetal head will align and reach the birth canal. If still obstructed after a long time, continue administering the previous medicine without stopping. If the fetal head has reached the birth canal but fails to descend for a long time, it is due to the failure of the Jiao Gu (pubic symphysis) to open. Quickly use Zha Mu Zhi (Oak Branch) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 2 liang, Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome) 1 liang, Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Duo Men Dan / Gate-Seizing Pill.) After a short while, there will surely be a loud sound, and the baby will be born. Truly a miraculous and extraordinary formula! If the fetal head has not yet descended, absolutely do not use Zha Mu Zhi. This herb specifically opens the pubic symphysis; if the birth canal opens before the fetus turns its head, it is a path to death. Therefore, this formula can only be used after the fetal head reaches the birth canal. These prenatal methods must be thoroughly mastered in mind so as not to panic during delivery.
Master Zhang said: There is no leukorrhea (Baidai) during pregnancy. If present, it is a sign of difficult labor. Even if delivery proceeds smoothly, postpartum syncope (Xueyun) may occur. The prescription uses Hei Dou (Black Soybean) 3 he, decocted in water to make 3 bowls. Take one bowl first, add Bai Guo (Ginkgo Seed) 10 pieces, Hong Zao (Jujube Fruit) 20 pieces, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 1 liang, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) 4 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) 2 qian, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 2 qian, Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) 4 qian, Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed) 4 qian. Add 2 bowls of water. Decoct and take orally. (Annotation: Shu Dai Tang / Belt-Binding Decoction.) One dose stops the discharge; two doses prevent recurrence permanently. It also treats all types of leukorrhea in women with miraculous efficacy.
Miscarriage (Xiaochan) is not a prenatal condition per se, nor is it full-term labor, but it can be treated using prenatal methods. When a woman delivers prematurely without full-term labor, it is called miscarriage. Although not as debilitating as full-term delivery, Qi and Blood are severely injured. Urgent tonification is required to prevent future hemorrhage (Benglou) during subsequent pregnancies. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 5 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 5 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 5 qian, Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) 2 qian, Pao Jiang (Roasted Ginger) 0.5 fen. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Quan Dai Tang / Complete Belt Decoction.) This formula is a sacred method for tonifying Qi and Blood. Uterine contractions leading to descent damage the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel). Tonifying Qi and Blood allows the damaged Dai Mai to regenerate, ensuring that future conceptions are not at risk of further injury.
Master Hua said: My treatment methods are the same as yours, but I have two formulas not yet transmitted: one for Threatened Abortion with Bleeding and one for Fetal Restlessness. For Fetal Restlessness: Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 1 liang, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 1 liang. Decoct in water and take orally. The brilliance of this formula lies in using Bai Zhu to benefit the waist and umbilical region, and Shu Di Huang to consolidate the root. With few ingredients but focused function, it achieves rapid results. This formula can save impoverished people. The Heavenly Master kept it for me to transmit to the world and establish merit. The Heavenly Master's grace is immense. The formula is named Hei Bai An Tai San (Black-White Fetal-Calming Powder).
The formula for Threatened Abortion with Bleeding is also remarkably unique: Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 5 qian, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 1 liang, San Qi Gen Mo (Notoginseng Root Powder) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Its brilliance lies in San Qi Gen Mo, a divine substance for stopping bleeding, hence its immediate efficacy. This formula surpasses general fetal-calming medicines. It is named Zhi Lou Jue Shen Dan (Stop-Leak Divine Pill).
Lord Leigong said: Difficult labor often results in the mother's death despite delivering the child, which pains the benevolent heart. However, difficult labor is not due to fetal obstruction but rather maternal Qi deficiency, causing the fetus unable to rotate. Thus, hands appear first, followed by feet. Upon seeing such presentation, do not panic. I have a divine method: Recite "Wu Shang Zhi Sheng Hua Sheng Fo" (Supreme Holy Birth-Generating Buddha) 100 times, and the fetal limbs will immediately retract. Urgently administer Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 1 qian, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 1 liang, Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome) 5 qian, Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) 1 liang. Decoct in water and drink. The fetal body will align, and delivery will occur instantly. Ginseng and Astragalus tonify Qi; Dang Gui and Ligusticum tonify Blood. Once Qi and Blood are sufficient, the fetus extends easily. Why use parturition-inducing pills? If Qi and Blood are not tonified, but parturition-inducing or abortifacient drugs are used, deficiency will worsen, killing either the mother or the child.
(Note: Fetal restlessness indicates Heat; lack of movement indicates Cold. Use Huang Qin for Heat, Sha Ren for Cold. For mixed Cold-Heat, use both Sha Ren and Huang Qin. People fail to distinguish Cold from Heat, regarding Huang Qin and Sha Ren as sacred fetal-calming herbs, which is erroneous. For breech/transverse presentation, Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) is best, though physicians ignore it. For retained placenta, frequent consumption of Ginseng Decoction, or adding a few fen of Sha Ren, for two to three days, will cause the placenta to pass naturally. Li Zi Yong records this.)

These are critical moments in labor; even famous doctors may be unprepared. This pill ensures life-saving recovery and must be prepared in advance. It also treats amenorrhea and irregular menstruation in unmarried women. These two formulas are not offered lightly but shared due to repeated successful trials. Handle with care for miraculous effects. Negligence in preparation or incorrect guides may cause mismatch between drug and syndrome, leading to regret. Do not blame the medicine. Practitioners should exercise caution.
