食,加大黄一钱;有痰,加天花粉三钱;伤风,加柴胡二钱;伤暑,加香薷三钱∶伤热,加石膏五钱;
On the Treatment of the Spleen and Stomach in Young People
The Heavenly Master said: "Young people have vigorous blood and qi. One should not arbitrarily employ blood-nourishing methods. One must first observe their physical strength and weakness, and then prescribe medication according to the disease; this will naturally ensure accuracy without error. The prescription consists of Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo) 1 qian; Poria (Fuling) 3 qian, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) 1 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 1 qian, Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) 1 qian, Amomi Fructus (Sharen) 3 grains, and Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) 1 qian. This formula serves as the base, and modifications are made according to specific symptoms, which naturally leads to efficacy. For those sensitive to cold, it is Taiyang Cold Damage (Shanghan); add Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 1 qian. For those sensitive to wind, it is Wind-Cold Attack (Shangfeng); add Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 qian. For those averse to eating, it is Food Retention (Shangshi); add Hordei Fructus Germinatus (Maiya) 3 qian and Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha) 30 grains. For alcohol injury, add Kudzu Root (Gegen) 1 qian. For sensitivity to dampness, it is Dampness Injury (Shangshi); add Poria (Fuling) and Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), each 1 qian. For aversion to heat, it is Heat Injury (Shangre); add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) 1 qian. For sensitivity to summerheat, it is Summerheat Injury (Shangshu); add Elsholtziae Herba (Xiangru) 1 qian. For excessive phlegm, add Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) 1 qian and Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen) 1 qian; other symptoms can be added accordingly. This is the method for treating young people, and it is not without profound meaning. By regulating the Spleen and Stomach, even if other herbs are added, the Stomach Qi will not be damaged, thus ensuring efficacy. One must not underestimate this."
Lord Zhang said: "The treatment method for young people is sound and exquisite; no further modifications are necessary."
On Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction)
The Heavenly Master said: "Treatment in the Southeast refers to treating people from the East and South using the same approach. The Southeast regions are all bright and sunny areas where the Cou Li (skin pores and interstices) are loose and prone to leakage, leading to frequent Qi deficiency. Moreover, their innate constitution is quite thin and weak, unlike the robust nature of people in the Northwest. If one treats them using the methods for Northwest people, danger will arise immediately. The prescription uses Ginseng Radix (Renshen) 1 qian, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) 2 qian, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 1.5 qian, Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi) 3 qian, Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 qian, Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) 0.5 qian, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) 0.5 qian, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 1 qian. This is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Modifications to this formula yield excellent results. The modification methods follow the treatment principles for the elderly, the young, the poor, and the rich."
Lord Zhang said: "For treatment in the Southeast, modifying Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) captures the essence perfectly; no further words are needed."
The Heavenly Master said: "People in the Northwest possess firm constitutions and robust bodies. They frequently consume cold water and cold rice, feeling refreshed only then; if hot-natured medicines are used, they feel as if fire is erupting from their mouths, noses, and eyes. Therefore, the treatment method is completely different from that for people in the Southeast. The prescription uses Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 0.5 qian, Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) 1 qian, Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) 1 qian, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) 1 qian, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao) 1 qian, Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo) 1 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) 1 qian, and Hordei Fructus Germinatus (Maiya) 2 qian, decocted in water. For food stagnation, add Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha) 30 grains; for food injury, add Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang) 1 qian; for phlegm, add Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen) 3 qian; for wind-cold attack, add Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 2 qian; for summerheat injury, add Elsholtziae Herba (Xiangru) 3 qian; for heat injury, add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) 5 qian; for Liver injury due to anger, add Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) 5 qian. All other cases should be modified according to the disease. This is how people in the Northwest are treated; because they are strong, more resolving and guiding agents are used."
Lord Zhang said: "The treatment method for the Northwest can still be deliberated. For robust individuals, Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang) 1 qian may be added."
Lord Hua said: "None."
