Chen Shiduo stated: The so-called "Day Treatment Method" refers to conditions that worsen during the day, with chills and fever (Fever and Chills) manifesting more severely than at night. Such syndromes must be intercepted before dawn. The prescription consists of Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 3 qian, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 5 qian, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 qian, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) 1 qian, Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) 1 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 5 qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Annotation: Bu Zheng Zhu Xie Tang [Supplement Uprightness and Expel Pathogen Decoction].) The brilliance of this formula lies in adding Chai Hu among Ren Shen, Huang Qin, Dang Gui, and Bai Zhu. Generally, pathogens dare to wreak havoc during the day because they exploit the deficiency of Zheng Qi (Upright Qi/Healthy Qi). Now, by using pathogen-expelling herbs together with herbs that tonify Zheng Qi to jointly attack the pathogen, Zheng Qi becomes sufficient, and the pathogen naturally retreats. This is akin to thieves breaking into a house with weapons during the daytime, openly bullying the weak master and thus acting without restraint. If the master shrinks back and hides, the thieves' arrogance will increase, leading to rampant plundering and the theft of all wealth. As Zheng Qi diminishes daily, how can the disease heal? The妙 (marvelous aspect) is entirely relying on herbs that tonify Zheng Qi as the sovereign drugs; thus, the master has no fear, commands at will, summons family members to fight bravely, and everyone comes from front, back, left, and right wielding farming tools, competing to defend. The thieves naturally lose their courage, fearing only that they cannot escape quickly enough. Moreover, the formula contains herbs like Chai Hu and Ban Xia, each eliminating pathogens. This is further likened to a situation where the master is brave and the servants are all warriors; if the thieves do not flee, they will surely be captured. The application of this formula for daytime treatment indeed possesses marvelous efficacy.
Master Zhang said: Marvelous. For diseases manifesting during the day, treating them with this method is most effective. I have another method for treating daytime syndromes, which yields results even more easily. The prescription uses Ren Shen 1 qian, Bai Zhu 5 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Chen Pi 1 qian, Chai Hu 2 qian, Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) 1 liang, Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Annotation: Yin Yang Jian Zhi Tang [Yin-Yang Simultaneous Treatment Decoction].) Master Chen's formula treats Yang Xu (Yang Deficiency) syndromes, whereas my formula treats Yang Xu combined with Yin Xu (Yin Deficiency). By referencing and using both formulas mutually, why worry about daytime diseases being difficult to treat?
Master Hua said: Agreed.
Master Lei said: Fever during the day indicates that the pathogen resides in the Yang portion of the body. Tonifying Yang Qi causes the pathogen to recede spontaneously. The prescription uses Ren Shen 3 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Bai Zhu 5 qian, Dang Gui 3 qian, Chen Pi 1 qian, and Chai Hu 2 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. If there is Phlegm (Tan), add Ban Xia 1 qian; if there is Food Stagnation (Shi), add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) 1 qian. The formula is named Zhu Zheng Tang (Assist Uprightness Decoction). By assisting Zheng Qi, the pathogen is expelled spontaneously without direct expulsion efforts.
