Chen Shiduo said: The so-called "standing treatment method" refers to the practice of not taking medicine while lying down or sitting, but rather standing up. For example, patients with Jue disease (a syndrome characterized by cold limbs and fainting) are like this. Jue syndrome often manifests as the two hands extending backward and the two feet turning inward; one must stand while drinking the medicine to achieve immediate results, a fact that must not be ignored. Jue syndrome originally belongs to heat diseases; the deeper the heat, the deeper the Jue. If the patient is allowed to lie down and take medicine, once the medicine reaches the stomach, it will encounter boiling fire qi, causing impact and preventing absorption, leading to vomiting, which is common. I now establish a method: standing while drinking medicine absolutely eliminates the fear of vomiting. The prescription uses Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 qian, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian, Fuling (Poria), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, Baijiezi (Brassicae Semen) 1 qian, Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Comment: Shunxing Tang). This prescription consists entirely of herbs that soothe the Liver, clearing fire while accommodating its nature, ensuring the medicine enters the mouth without being vomited. However, since fire and heat flare upward, vomiting is also common; therefore, having someone hold the patient upright while another administers the medicine, waiting for the medicine to stay in the mouth for a while before swallowing, and then holding them to lie down, allows the medicinal properties to flow smoothly without the suffering of vomiting. This is the method of standing treatment; can people ignore it?
There is also the symptom of lower back pain, which is also suitable for standing while taking medicine. Because the lower back belongs to the Kidney, lower back pain arises from Kidney deficiency, and over time, the Kidney palace (Kidney system) becomes increasingly deficient. Even if there are Kidney-tonifying medicines, they are reluctant to enter the Kidney palace directly, just like a prodigal son who has been away for a long time and regards his home as an enemy state. Even with money in hand, he may wander elsewhere. One must support the body and have him stand while taking the medicine so that the medicine can enter the Kidney meridian directly. It is like a prodigal son unwilling to return home; only after being persuaded by others does he reluctantly return. When sitting or lying, water and food essence cannot reach and circulate directly to the Kidneys; standing allows the flavors of water and food to enter. Therefore, one person must support the patient in standing so that the medicine can arrive. The prescription uses Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 1 liang, Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus) 4 qian, Bei Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 1 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 2 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) 5 qian, decocted in wine and taken orally. (Comment: Jianyao Dan). Although this prescription is excellent, it cannot reach the Kidney palace directly unless taken while standing. This is another妙处 (subtlety) of the standing treatment method; do people know it?
Master Zhang said: There are few conditions requiring standing treatment; only these two conditions, no further discussion.
