On Tendon Diseases and Vessel Diseases
The Heavenly Master said: The tendons of the whole body and the vessels penetrating the entire frame should not be diseased. If disease occurs, the tendons will contract causing body pain, and the vessels will become choppy (Se) resulting in a heavy sensation in the body. However, the relaxation of tendons depends on the harmony of Blood, while the tranquility of vessels depends on the sufficiency of Qi. Therefore, treating tendon diseases requires regulating Blood, and treating vessel diseases requires tonifying Qi. If a person suffers from tense and curled tendons, stooping posture unable to stand upright, or inability to bend forward or extend backward straightly, these are all tendon diseases. The prescription consists of Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 1 liang, Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 5 qian, Yi Ren (Semen Coicis) 5 qian, Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 5 qian, Yuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae) 5 qian, and Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. The novelty of this prescription lies in the use of Chai Hu within blood-tonifying herbs. Generally, when Blood is deficient, tendon diseases arise; thus, using blood-tonifying herbs to treat tendons is appropriate. Why then use Chai Hu for dispersing? One must understand that tendons are the surplus of Liver Qi. When Liver Qi is stagnant, tendons contract and tighten, even leading to stooping. Now, by using Chai Hu to soothe the stagnation of Liver vessels, once the stagnant Qi is removed, and aided by large doses of blood-nourishing substances, the tendons receive nourishment and become loose. Once the tendons are loose, all symptoms will resolve.
Symptoms of insufficient Blood vessels manifest as deficiency in the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), Du Mai (Governing Vowel), and Yin and Yang meridians, or dryness of hair, loss of temple hair, lack of luster in complexion, or haggard appearance. People often attribute such symptoms to declining Qi, but who knows it is actually the exhaustion of Blood? The method should be to tonify Blood. However, Blood cannot be tonified abruptly; it must be done gradually. The prescription uses Dang Gui 1 qian, Bai Shao 3 qian, Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) 1 qian, Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) 4 qian, Bai Guo (Semen Ginkgo) 5 pieces, He Shou Wu (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori) 3 qian, and Sang Ye (Folium Mori) 7 leaves, decocted in water and taken orally. This decoction is essentially Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Its brilliance lies in using Bai Guo to guide the medicine to the lips and teeth, Sang Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae - *Note: Text says Sang Ye but explanation implies guiding to skin/hair, traditionally Sang Bai Pi guides to skin, but strictly translating text*) to guide it to the skin and hair, and He Shou Wu to guide it to the temples and hair. Consequently, luster naturally arises, and the countenance naturally glows. This is the method for treating vessels, which people should also know.
Master Zhang said: Regarding the treatment of tendons and vessels, I have two more unique prescriptions to pass down. Use Dang Gui 3 qian, Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra/Alba) 1 liang, Shu Di Huang 2 liang, Chai Hu 1 qian, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 5 qian, Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 1 qian, and Bai Jie Zi (Semen Mustardae) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. [Commentary: Zi Jin Shu Gan Tang (Nourish Tendons and Soothe Liver Decoction)]. This prescription employs the method of simultaneously treating Kidney and Liver. Although tendons belong to the Liver, nourishing the Liver necessarily involves the Kidney. By greatly tonifying the Kidney now, and adding herbs that soothe the Liver, how could the tendons fail to be nourished and feel comfortable?
For treating vessels, use Dang Gui 1 liang, Bai Shao 3 qian, Sheng Di Huang 3 qian, Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 3 qian, Shu Di Huang 1 liang, Wan Nian Qing (Hemionitis arifolia) 3 fen, Gou Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii) 2 qian, Han Lian Cao (Herba Ecliptae) 1 qian, Hua Jiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) 3 fen, and Tian Dong (Radix Asparagi) 3 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. All ingredients in this prescription are blood-tonifying substances, and they ascend to the face. Long-term consumption will naturally turn the temples black and moisten the complexion. It can be transmitted alongside the Heavenly Master's method.
Master Hua said: I have no prescription [for general ailments]. But for darkening hair, I have an extremely unique prescription. There are many prescriptions in the world, yet none yield results overnight. My unique prescription guarantees your hair will turn black again within ten days. Use Shu Di Huang 3 liang, He Shou Wu 3 liang (use raw, not processed; use red, not white; use round, not long), Chao Hei Zhi Ma (Fried Sesame Seed) 1 liang, Wan Nian Qing 2 pieces, Sang Ye 2 liang, Shan Yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) 3 liang, Bai Guo 30 pieces, and Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi) 3 qian. Grind each into fine powder. Do not let them touch iron vessels. Form into pills. Take 1 liang daily after breakfast. Within ten days, your hair will surely be black. This is my self-created prescription, personally verified to cure others.
Qi Tian Shi said: Add Hua Jiao 1 qian. This prescription is extraordinarily unique. Is Master Hua not afraid of leaking heavenly secrets?
