Take Pian Jianghuang (Curcumae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (each 2.5 qian), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian). These herbs constitute one dose. Add two zhong of water and seven slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until one sheng remains.
For wind-dampness presenting with a floating pulse, heaviness of the body, sweating, and aversion to wind:
Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (1 liang), Chao Gancao (Stir-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (0.75 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1.1 liang, remove the root tip).
Crush the herbs to the size of hemp seeds (take 5 qian bi per dose). Add four slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and one Dazao (Jujubae Fructus). Add one and a half sheng of water, decoct until eight parts remain, strain, and take warm. Wait for a considerable time before taking another dose.
If there is wheezing, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (0.5 liang); if there is stomach disharmony, add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 fen); if there is qi rushing upward, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (2 fen); if there is chronic cold below, add Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma).
After taking the medicine, one should feel as if insects are crawling under the skin, and the area from the waist down may feel cold like ice. Subsequently, sit on a quilt and wrap another quilt around the waist and lower body to keep it warm until thorough sweating occurs, at which point the disease will be cured.
This is Fangji Huangqi Tang (Astragalus and Stephania Decoction) with Baizhu removed and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Fuling (Poria) added. Use six sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng, and divide into three warm doses. It treats pi-shui (skin edema) causing pain, swelling of the four limbs, and slight tremors in the skin and limbs.
Use Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (1 fen), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (3 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (3 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 fen). Soak in one cup of wine overnight, then press and extract the juice. Add Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) (2 jin).
Chop and steam it for as long as it takes to steam rice in a dou (a large measure), then collect the juice in a copper vessel. Press again to extract the Rehmannia juice, mix with the previous extract, and divide into two doses to take. It treats conditions manifesting as manic behavior, continuous solitary speech, absence of chills, and a floating pulse.
Use Mufangji (Stephaniae Membranaceae Radix) (3 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (12 pieces, size of an egg), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (4 liang). Use six sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng, and divide into warm doses.
It treats zhi-yin (branching fluid retention) in the diaphragm, characterized by wheezing and fullness, hardness and distension in the epigastrium, dark facial complexion, and a deep, tight pulse. If the condition has persisted for dozens of days and purgative or emetic treatments have failed, this decoction is indicated. If the excess syndrome recurs after three days and does not resolve with repeated administration, the subsequent formula with added Fuling (Poria) and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) should be used.
Use Mufangji (Stephaniae Membranaceae Radix) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Fuling (Poria) (each 4 liang), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (3 he). Use six sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng, simmer slightly, and divide into two warm doses. Mild diarrhea indicates cure.
Use Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Jiaomu (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae), Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae), and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang). Grind into powder, make pills with honey the size of wu-tzu (wu-tzu refers to the seeds of Cudrania tricuspidata, roughly 8-9mm in diameter). Take one pill before meals with water, three times a day. Increase the dosage slightly. If saliva increases and thirst persists, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (0.5 liang). It treats abdominal fullness and dryness of the mouth and tongue, indicating fluid retention in the intestines; this formula is indicated.
