Take Xiangru Yin (Elsholtzia Decoction), remove Fabae Fructus (Fava Bean), and add Folium Eriobotryae (Loquat Leaf), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Tangerine Peel), Flos Caryophylli (Clove), Fructus Chaenomelis (Papaya), Herba Imperatae Rhizoma (Mao Gen), Fructus Ophiopogonis (Mai Dong), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice). Use 50 jin of dried Herba Elsholtziae (Elsholtzia), chop it, place it in a cauldron, cover with water by three cun, and boil until the medicinal power is fully extracted. Remove the dregs, clarify the liquid, and simmer over low fire until it can be formed into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take five pills per dose, three times a day, gradually increasing the dosage until urination becomes smooth, which indicates recovery. Treats edema disease presenting as massive swelling.
Use 1 jin of Folium Elsholtziae (Elsholtzia Leaf) and one dou of water to decoct into an extract, filter out the dregs, and continue boiling to form a thick paste. Add 7 liang of powder from Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Atractylodes) and mix to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills per dose with warm water. Treats generalized edema. ○ Li Shizhen said: Physicians generally use Xiangru Yin (Elsholtzia Decoction) for all summerheat conditions. However, summerheat illness may arise from cooling off or consuming cold drinks, causing Yang Qi to be constrained by Yin pathogens, resulting in headache, fever, aversion to cold, restlessness, thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, or cholera-like symptoms; in such cases, Xiangru Yin is suitable to release Yang Qi and harmonize Water. If there is extreme thirst, profuse sweating like rain, restlessness, panting, or diarrhea/vomiting, these are signs of internal injury due to fatigue and exhaustion, requiring Yi Yuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder). Using Xiangru would further deplete the exterior and aggravate with heat. Moreover, excessive use of Xiangru has drawbacks. Modern people do not realize that summerheat damages Yuan Qi and indiscriminately use it as tea, claiming it wards off summerheat; this is truly foolish talk.
Use 1 sheng each of Folium Elsholtziae (Elsholtzia Leaf) and Folium Lablab Album (Lablab Bean Leaf), one sliced Fructus Chaenomelis (Papaya), and 1 liang sliced Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Dried Ginger). Boil in six sheng of water to obtain two sheng and five he, filter out the dregs, and divide into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to walking for six or seven li. Treats cholera with vomiting and diarrhea.
Treats head wind, nasal congestion, heavy voice, and stiffness/urgency in the shoulders and back.
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Ban Liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao, 1.5 qian).
Grind into coarse powder, decoct in water, filter, and take divided into two doses before sleep. Another method adds Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica), Xin Yi (Magnolia Flower), and Gan Ju (Chrysanthemum) to treat yellow nasal discharge, persistent turbid rhinorrhea, brain pain, and blurred vision. Another method uses only Xi Xin (Asari).
This is Xiongxin Tang (Ligusticum and Asari Decoction) added with Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fu Zi), Radix Aconiti Carmichaelii (Chuan Wu), Rhizoma Arisaematis (Nan Xing), and Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Gan Jiang) in equal parts. Take 4 qian per dose with five slices of ginger and a little sprout tea, decocted in water. Treats all types of unilateral and central headaches. Except for those with fever who should not take it, other conditions such as Phlegm Jue, Fluid Jue, and Kidney Jue can be treated by intermittently taking this medicine mixed with Pulm Belostomi (Zhong Ru). It is the most rapid and effective method for treating headache. Gypsum is often used for headache to sink phlegm-fluids, but fearing its cold nature, Zhong Ru (Belostoma Shell) is used instead.
