This is Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) with Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) removed, and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) added. Zhang Yuansu (Haihāng) stated that this formula clears Lung heat.
This is Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) with Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) removed, and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) added. This is the Maidongdong Tang from *Jisheng Fang*, containing Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Fushen (Poria cum Pinus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), without Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jingmi (Oryzae Semen), or Dazao. It treats conditions of Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) with a full pulse, extreme Qi and Blood deficiency, etc.
This is Maidongdong Tang with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) removed, and Pao Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) (one piece) added. It treats cold qi in the abdomen causing borborygmus and cutting pain, rebellious fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, and vomiting.
This is Zhuye Shigao Tang with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Jingmi (Oryzae Semen) removed, and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), the herbs of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Danzhuye (Bambusae Folium) added. It treats various sores on the back (Fabei), excessive thirst, and depletion of blood fluids.
This is Maidongdong Tang without Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jingmi (Oryzae Semen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), or Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), but with Fuling (Poria), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) added. It treats Zifan (pregnancy-related irritability) and jingqie (fearfulness) in pregnant women.
In Taiyang disease after five to six days, or in wind-stroke, presenting with alternating chills and fever, fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, lack of desire for food, vexation, and frequent vomiting:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (half jin, bitter, slightly cold) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (three liang, bitter, cold) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (three liang, sweet, warm) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (three liang, sweet, neutral) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (half sheng, washed, pungent)
The above seven ingredients are boiled in one dou two sheng of water, reduced to six sheng, strained, and then decocted again to three sheng. Take one sheng warm, three times daily.
Cheng Wuji stated: The *Neijing* says, "When heat overflows within, disperse it with bitter flavors." The bitterness of Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) disperses the heat of transmitted pathogens. When interior deficiency exists, soothe it with sweet flavors; the sweetness of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)... Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus) harmonize Ying and Wei. It also states: "When pathogen is in the exterior, soak the form to induce sweat; when pathogen is in the interior, cleanse it..." This is suitable for inducing sweat, yet it is not appropriate for emesis or purgation. Therefore, harmonization is indicated; this is Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) harmonizing the exterior and interior...
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) add Gualou Shi (Trichosanthis Fructus). If there is thirst, remove Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), totaling four and a half liang, plus Gualou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix) (four liang). If there is abdominal pain, remove Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (three liang). If there is palpable hardness under the hypochondrium, remove Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) and add Muli (Ostreae Concha) (four liang). If there is
palpitation, mild
cough,
remove
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), remove Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and add Gualou Tang (Trichosanthes Decoction).
This is the base formula removing Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and adding Gualou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix) (four liang). It treats malaria with thirst upon onset, and also treats Lao Nue (Chronic Malaria).
This is Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) removing Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and adding Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (three liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (four liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (two liang), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (two liang). It treats Taiyang disease
for more than ten days, and after two or three purgations, when five or six days have passed, if the Chaihu syndrome persists with slight vexation. *Waitai Mi Yao* does not include Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). Cheng Wuji said: Without Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), it might not constitute Da Chaihu Tang.
Cheng Wuji stated: For great fullness, great excess, firmness, and dry stool, only potent purgatives can drain them; Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) and Xiao Chengqi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction) are such formulas. If the condition does not reach great firmness and fullness, but pathogenic heat is severe and requires purgation,
a milder agent must be used for purgation; Da Chaihu Tang (Greater Bupleurum Decoction) is such a formula.
