Li Bai, the Great Immortal, said: "I have read medical books and believe that the section on Cold Damage (Shanghan) is of utmost importance. Cases of 'Liang Gan' (simultaneous involvement of exterior and interior meridians) and 'Ge Jing' (cross-meridian transmission) are already explicitly excluded in previous texts. Now, regarding symptoms such as mania, climbing high and singing, or discarding clothes to run about..."
For treating macules (skin eruptions) caused by Cold Damage: If macules appear all over the body, the condition appears severe but is actually mild; only if macules appear in the epigastrium (heart pit), does it appear mild but is actually severe. Epigastric macules indicate heat retained in the Heart. The prescription uses: Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 3 qian, which must nourish the Heart Spirit to harmonize Qi and Blood.
In cases of Jie Xiong (chest binding/painful mass) accompanied by irritability, it is a death syndrome; purgation is contraindicated, and even if used, it leads to death. Such Jie Xiong with irritability indicates the impending extinction of Stomach Qi. If Stomach Qi is extinct, how can Body Fluids be generated? Since Body Fluids cannot be generated...
The prescription is: Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root) 5 qian, Zhi Ke (Aurantium Fruit) 1 qian, Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) 5 fen, Mai Ya (Barley Sprout) 3 qian, Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Tuber) 3 qian, Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark) 3 qian, Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) 3 qian. Zhi Ke and Tian Hua Fen rapidly resolve stagnation.
There is a syndrome called Zang Jie (visceral knotting), recorded under the Taiyang Meridian, but it is actually not a Taiyang disease. Why is it recorded under Taiyang? Precisely to differentiate Taiyang conditions that present with similar symptoms but different pathologies...
The prescription is: Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) 5 qian, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 1 qian, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 1 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take orally. Bai Zhu promotes the movement of Qi in the waist and umbilical region; Ren Shen rescues the extinction of Primordial Yang; Dang Gui invigorates blood throughout the body; Gan Cao harmonizes the Middle Jiao to alleviate pain; Fu Zi and Rou Gui dispel cold and expel pathogens. Once the internal viscera are warmed, the knotting will naturally dissipate.
If a person presents with fixed staring, delirious speech, wheezing and chest fullness, and diarrhea, it is a death syndrome. However, if the Qi of one Zang organ has not yet perished, it may still be treatable. The prescription uses: Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 5 qian, Ren Shen... to stop...
In complicated cases of Cold Damage (Huai Zheng), where the patient has already undergone sweating, vomiting, or purging, yet fever persists, it is an untreatable syndrome. Here, this special prescription is transmitted to remedy the errors of these three methods. The prescription uses... Gui... Sheng ye...
In Shaoyin disease, aversion to cold, curling up of the body, and diarrhea constitute an untreatable syndrome. When Yang Qi is about to perish, urgent use of Yang-tonifying herbs is required to reverse the condition. The prescription uses: Ren Shen 2... recovery...
When vomiting and diarrhea occur simultaneously, accompanied by stifling sensation and cold limbs (Si Ni), it is a death syndrome. However, if treated early, rescue is possible. The prescription uses: Ren Shen 2 liang...
Although diarrhea has ceased, dizziness and vertigo persist; this is also a death syndrome. Although Yang Qi has returned, Yin Qi is extinct. Due to the extinction of Yin, all Yang Qi gathers at the head, and Yang has not yet...
Cold limbs, aversion to cold, curling up of the body, absence of pulse, no irritability but restlessness, is originally a death syndrome. It is considered salvageable because although the pulse is absent, the lack of irritability suggests Yang has not completely perished... Heart...
Rapid, shallow breathing appearing between the sixth and seventh days indicates Shaoyin disease, not Taiyang disease. 'Xi Gao' refers to weak nasal respiration. This results from the depletion of True Qi in the lower Yuan... Liang... ye.
In Cold Damage Shaoyin disease, if the pulse is faint, fine, and deep; the patient desires to sleep; there is sweating without irritability; and spontaneous desire to vomit; progressing to day five or six with spontaneous diarrhea, followed by irritability and inability to lie down, it is a death syndrome... Liang...
A slow pulse indicates cold; mistakenly using Huang Qin Tang exacerbates the cold. Extreme cold presenting with the ability to eat is named 'Chu Zhong' (removal of the middle). Adding cold-natured herbs to a cold stomach paradoxically leads to appetite... Qi Chu... Rou Gui...
In Cold Damage, if six or seven days pass with a faint pulse, cold limbs, and irritability, and the cold limbs do not recover, it is a death syndrome. For cold syndromes presenting with cold limbs, moxibustion on the Jueyin meridian is a last resort... Can Fu... fu, starting from the navel...
In Cold Damage, fever accompanied by cold limbs indicates a potential for survival, as pathogens are moving outward. However, cold limbs may occur occasionally once or twice, but not frequently. If diarrhea becomes severe, how can one... penetrate through... decoct and take...
If Heat persists for six or seven days without diarrhea, but suddenly diarrhea occurs, it is a critical syndrome. Especially if sweating continues incessantly, this indicates collapse of Yang (Wang Yang). With Yin present but Yang absent, death is evident... Sheng. Qian.
Diarrhea with cold limbs and absence of pulse is urgent. The Qi of the Guan Yuan point cannot emerge without moxibustion. After moxibustion, if the pulse still does not return and slight panting occurs... 3 qian, Shu Di (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 5 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Fu Zi 1 qian, named Huan Mai Tang (Pulse-Restoring Decoction). If the pulse returns after one dose, death ensues; if the pulse gradually returns, full recovery is hoped for...
In Cold Damage, if there is diarrhea more than ten times daily but the pulse is surprisingly forceful/excess, it is a death syndrome. Why? Collapse of Yang should present with a weak pulse; if it is not weak but shows a false excess appearance... is Zheng... ye. The prescription uses...
