陈修园说：凡是植物遇到春天萌芽而逐渐生长，现在取干燥的谷物使其透出芽来，更能通达木气以制约和化育脾土，所以能够消导米谷积滞。由此类推麦芽、黍芽、大豆黄卷，药性都相近。而麦子春天生长夏天成熟，尤其得木火之气，凡是因气机郁结导致形成膨胀等病症，使用它最为巧妙。人们只知道它能消化谷物，却不知道它能疏肝解郁，这就像只称赞千里马力气大一样（忽略了其神骏之能）。
【葛根】气味苦、寒，无毒。主治伤寒引起的头痛、寒热往来、瘴气恶毒、烦躁胸闷、虚劳喘息、两脚疼痛发冷。（引自《名医别录》）

Chen Xiuyuan stated: All things sprout and gradually grow when encountering spring. Now, taking dried grains to induce sprouting can further penetrate the Wood qi to regulate and transform Spleen Earth, thus it can resolve and guide stagnation of rice and grain. By extension, Germinated Wheat (*Maiya*), Germinated Millet (*Shuye*), and Germinated Soybean (*Dadou Huangjuan*) have similar properties. Wheat grows in spring and matures in summer, obtaining especially strong Wood and Fire qi. For conditions such as distension caused by Qi stagnation, using it is most exquisite. People only know its ability to digest food, but do not know its ability to soothe the Liver; this is like praising a thoroughbred only for its strength.
[Kudzu Root (Puerariae Radix)] The flavor is bitter, the nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats headache and alternating chills and fever due to Shanghan (Cold Damage), miasma and malignant toxins, restlessness and chest fullness, deficiency-type labor with panting, and pain and coldness in both legs. [Adzuki Bean (Vigna Angularis)] The flavor is sweet, the nature is greatly warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies deficient qi, stops thirst, and removes blood stasis. (From *Bielu*)
[Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens)] The flavor is pungent, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats wind-cold invasion from evil winds, induces sweating to release the exterior, dispels foul qi and heart/abdominal fullness, Huoluan (cholera-like disorder), retained food that fails to digest, and directs rebellious qi downward. It primarily treats evil pathogens, kills Guizhu toxicity (parasitic/toxic diseases), stops palpitations and fright, and treats malignant sores and Shulou (scrofula/tuberculous lymphadenitis).
