Sweet and pungent in flavor. It primarily resolves all kinds of toxins. It kills various ancient spirits, ghosts, plagues, diseases, evil influences, poisonous substances, and gu poison. Long-term consumption prevents premature death. Also known as Zhou Shengma (Zhou Cimicifuga). It grows in mountain valleys.
Gathering upward is called "Sheng" (Ascending). It drives away mountain spirits and demons; the plant has deep roots with many fibers, and its white flower spikes hang down in profusion. The stem is hard like chicken bone; the heart of a bird stores wisdom; a new bride feels ashamed of her appearance; the little stars are complete.
The *I Ching* states: That which gathers and ascends is called Sheng. Yu Xin's fu says: Driving away mountain spirits and demons. Su Song states: The root resembles that of mugwort, black in color and fibrous. In the fourth and fifth months, it flowers, resembling a bird flying urgently after accidentally ingesting poison, though slightly different. The *Book of Songs* says: That...
Sweet and cold in flavor. It primarily treats evil qi in the five zang organs, wind-cold-damp bi syndrome. It benefits qi, supplements brain marrow, and strengthens bones and sinews. Long-term consumption enhances hearing and vision, prevents hunger, and delays aging.
It is the seedling of Jusheng (Sesamum indicum, Black Sesame). It grows in river valleys.
Sown in autumn fields, the lush seedlings are harvested first. As a vegetable, it produces slippery mucus when pickled; used for washing hair, it flows like clouds. It branches out, with sharp tips hanging down. Internally, it maintains firmness; in dreams, it allows for carefree wandering.
Li Shizhen states: In autumn, take Jusheng seeds and sow them in fields, cultivating them like lettuce. When the seedlings emerge, harvest and eat them; they are slippery and delicious. The *Bencao* records the efficacy of consuming it as a vegetable. The leaves vary: some are round at the base and sharp at the tip; others are round at the base and trifid at the tip. Lu You's poem says: The long slipperiness of Xianghu is just right. Kou Zongshi states: Soaking it in hot water for a long time releases mucus; women use it to wash their hair. Wang Yuanliang's poem says: The phoenix hairpin falls on brocade, dark clouds of hair drift. The *Huangting Jing* states: Maintaining firmness internally is the true essence. Wu Pu states: Also known as Mengshen (Dream Spirit).
Sweet and warm in flavor. It primarily treats severe wind-evil qi, damp-bi cold pain. Long-term consumption lightens the body, extends life, and promotes longevity. Also known as Dongkuizi (Malva seed).
Let us say "Xu Xu" (slowly/gently). Only what should grow survives, regardless of dampness, dryness, cold, or warmth; it drives away wind and suppresses evil qi. This vegetable is not Dongkui (Malva); smoke can dispel the toxicity of wild gecko (Aconitum). The chicken is named for its essence; the meaning is difficult to fully encompass.
The *Mencius* says: It is merely said to be Xu Xu. The *Shuo Yuan* states: Bian Que treated the Crown Prince of Zhao, saying that only what should grow would survive. Tao Hongjing states: Dongkui is not the vegetable Dongkui. Li Shizhen states: When Wild Gecko (Aconitum) is broken, if green smoke emerges, it is called Guhuo. Su Gong states: Also known as Jijing (Chicken Essence). The *Luho Yelu* states: Manifesting on a letter, it is particularly comprehensive yet intricate.
