[Tianmendong / Asparagi Radix]
Bitter, neutral. Primarily treats various sudden rheumatic wind-induced hemiplegic bi-syndrome (pain and numbness in half of the body due to wind-dampness). Strengthens the bone marrow. Kills three types of parasites (intestinal worms). Removes fusishi (latent blood stasis or accumulations). Long-term consumption makes the body light. Tonifies qi and prolongs life. Also known as Dianle. Grows in mountain valleys.
Heavenly Gate and Earthly Gate, different names corresponding to different soils. Vines extend in the spring morning, climbing with night rain. Repeatedly bathed and nourished, hair becomes thick and curly; it also strengthens teeth and treats dental caries. The treasures of Yulei Mountain and Xingqiao cannot compare with it. Qiangmi (seedlings of Rubus chingii) are not its equal.
Baopuzi records that it is sometimes called Dimendong. The Book of Documents mentions dividing the soil into three. Su Song states: In spring, vines grow, as thick as a hairpin shaft. The leaves are like silk fir but fine and scattered. Zhu Xi's poem: "Rain on the west window last night." Lie Xian Zhuan records: Chisongzi consumed Tianmendong, causing lost teeth to regrow and sparse hair to reappear. The Book of Songs says: "That person is beautiful and has curly hair." Shuowen Jiezi explains: This describes the appearance of good hair. Lu You's poem: "Dental caries, though a minor ailment." Prince Jianwen of Liang's letter mentions: "Upon seeing it from Xingqiao." Treasuring the jade of Yulei. Jiuhuang Bencao points out: Qiangmi are the seedlings of Yingshi. Erya identifies them as Mendong, possibly due to misplaced bamboo slips in ancient texts.
[Gancao / Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma]
Sweet, neutral. Primarily treats cold and heat pathogenic factors of the five zang and six fu organs. Strengthens sinews and bones, increases muscle mass, and enhances strength. Treats metal wounds (trauma from sharp instruments), detoxifies. Long-term consumption makes the body light and prolongs life. Grows in river valleys.
In mid-spring and mid-autumn, auspicious days are chosen for harvesting and removing impurities. The name corresponds to sweetness and beauty; the meaning leads to harmony and neutrality. Weeds are messy; mineral drugs are biased. Although solid, they must be resolved. The State Elder (Guolao) is white-haired.
Famous physicians state: Harvest on the last day of February and August. Also known as Miguan, also known as Meicao. Zhongyong states: "Achieve harmony and neutrality." Zhen Quan states: It treats seventy-two types of mineral drug toxicity and resolves one thousand two hundred types of plant toxicity. It has merit in harmonizing various herbs. Hanshu Zhuan mentions: "Messy weeds are not managed." The Book of Documents states: "Neither biased nor partial." Guanzi states: "Although solid, it must be resolved." Famous physicians state: Also known as Guolao. Ban Gu's poem: "The white-haired State Elder."
[Gandi Huang / Rehmanniae Radix Preparata]
Sweet, cold. Primarily treats fractures, dislocations, torn sinews, and internal injuries. Drives out blood bi (bi-syndrome caused by blood stasis), fills the bone marrow, increases muscle mass. When made into a decoction, it removes cold-heat accumulations and eliminates bi-syndrome. Fresh root is especially effective. Long-term consumption makes the body light and delays aging. Also known as Disui. Grows in rivers and marshes.
Among medicinal substances, none are more oily/gelatinous than Disui. Swallowing the sweet nectar like dew, retaining light for night vision. Old horses give birth to foals; infants with black-chinned hair rejoice. Why seek Jinzhi (a type of Lingzhi)? Internal heat is washed away in one go.
Su Shi's letters state: Among medicinal substances, none are more oily/gelatinous than Dihuang. Another poem: "Swallowing it is like precious auspicious dew." Baopuzi records: Chu Wenzi consumed Dihuang for eight years, gaining night vision. Another account: Han Yu used Dihuang seedlings to feed a fifty-year-old horse, which gave birth to two foals. Lu You's poem: "Young children happily tell the old man, black threads grow on snow-white chins. Sending word to friends in the mountains, why seek Jinzhi?" Su Shi's poem: "Wishing to offer this to those with internal heat, to wash away the dust in their chests in one go."
