Pungent in flavor, cold in nature. Primarily treats facial carbuncles and swellings. Alleviates the sensation of coldness accompanied by pain in the skin. Regulates blood and qi in the intestines. Breaks up accumulations caused by cold and heat pathogens. Eliminates palpitations and fright. Also known as *Shu Shi* (Mouse Feces, specifically referring to *Tian Shu Shi*). Also known as *Shi Gan* (Stone Liver). Grows in mountain valleys.
[Verse Praise] The mouse rat becomes an immortal, roaming at night and hiding during the day. The eyes of mosquitoes and gnats are gathered; the liver-like star sand is condensed. Deep caves accumulate piles [of feces]; empty steps show sparse spots. Like the stars of the heavenly toilet sinking down, the spiritual evening flame demonstrates efficacy.
Ma Zhi stated: It is also called *Fei Shu* (Flying Mouse). Su Gong stated: It is also called *Xian Shu* (Immortal Mouse). *Shi Yi Ji* records: Beside Taiye Pool, the Xiaoyou Palace was built. Sima Xiangru's fu mentions: "The gates and pavilions are closed during the day." Li Shizhen stated: Its feces are all the eyes of mosquitoes and gnats. Tao Hongjing stated: It is also called *Hei Sha Xing* (Black Sand Star). Chen Zi'ang's poem reads: "In the deep cave, there is no lingering trace." Wang Anshi's poem reads: "One plant beside the road, snow-piled high." Lu You's poem reads: "Sparse spots on the empty steps like rain." *Bu Tian Ge* records: Below the left foot, there are four Heavenly Toilets. Near the toilet, below, there is an object called *Tian Shi Chen*. Zhang Heng's fu states: There is also Heavenly Feces, yellow in quality, demonstrating spirit. Emperor Yuan of Liang's poem reads: "A hundred branches condense the evening flame."
Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature. Primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids, erosion of the yin organs. Passage of red and white bloody discharge. Unstopping of blood juice of five colors. Swelling and pain in the yin organs radiating to the lower back. Boil with wine to destroy the pathogen. Grows in river valleys.
[Verse Praise] Tracks of the hoofed mouse, curled and dense. Prickles clustered like chestnuts, needles bundled like water caltrop husks. Leaping up, tigers retreat; lying on its back, magpies capture it. Glancing sideways obscures beauty; leaving leopard skin earns equal admiration.
Tao Hongjing stated: Those with feet resembling hooves are superior. Mouse tracks are secondary. Li Shizhen stated: When curled, the shape resembles chestnut burrs and water caltrop shells. *Pi Ya* records: Chestnuts have prickles, wrapping themselves. Su Zhe's poem reads: "Purple covers and green prickles gather hair." *Book of Jin* biography records: People of the time said to Cui Hong: "Thorny bristles grow densely." *Youyang Zazu* records: Sellers of prickles print them with clustered needles. *Book of Han* biography records: Cases of leaping away to escape were numerous. *Huainanzi* records: Letting tigers stretch their bodies. Su Gong stated: It dislikes the sound of magpies; lying on its back, it receives pecks. *Huainanzi* records: For a beauty of the world, if covered with skin, people will not fail to glance sideways and cover their noses. *History of the Five Dynasties* biography records: Wang Yanzhang said: When a leopard dies, it leaves its skin.
