[Lan Cao]
The flavor is sweet, and the nature is warm. It primarily tonifies Qi (vital energy). It removes black spots and dullness from the face, making the complexion beautiful and charming. The root has a pungent flavor and primarily treats cold and heat pathogenic factors in the abdomen, promoting urination. Long-term consumption prevents hunger and lightens the body. It is also known as Jin Gen Hua (Tendon Root Flower) or Jin Fei (Golden Boiling). It grows in plains and marshes.
Cutting one-cun segments of the seedling for planting, roots can sprout within ten days. The branches are sparse and fine, winding around; the stems are hollow and round like a spinning drum. The tendons and muscles are strong and firm, and the appearance is enchanting. It covers the field ridges and intersects the irrigation channels, ready to be harvested with a hoe.
Kou Zongshi stated: Placing the cut one-cun roots into the soil and irrigating them for ten days results in many seedlings growing in the fields, which are difficult to weed out, as they regenerate after being treated. Li Shizhen stated:
The variety with thousand leaves has pink flowers, commonly called Chuan Zhi Mu Dan (Winding Branch Peony). Its flowers do not have petal shapes but resemble the trumpet vine flowers blown in military bands, hence the names Xuan Hua (Spinning Flower) and Gu Zi (Drum Seed). Famous physicians recorded that the root primarily aids in knitting bones and tendons, and people in the south call it Xu Jin Gen (Continuing Tendon Root). *Guanzi* records: "Strong and firm." Yuan Haowen's poem states: "Its demeanor is skillfully charming." Yu Xin's poem states: "Melons ripen on the ridges, fragrant ears droop at the field intersections." Su Shi explained: "Weeding mugwort, following each other above." The *Shi Jian* (Commentary on Poetry) states: "I wish to harvest the mixed firewood."
[Lan Cao - Second Entry]
The flavor is pungent, and the nature is neutral. It primarily promotes the flow of water passages, kills gu poison (parasitic disease), and wards off inauspiciousness. Long-term consumption tonifies Qi, lightens the body, delays aging, and enhances spiritual clarity. It is also known as Shui Xiang (Water Fragrance). It grows in ponds and marshes.
Gathering Lan Cao by the Yuan and Xiang rivers, washing skirts by the Qin and Wei streams. Thrown obliquely like swallow-tail scissors, initially bathing like Ji Su (Mosla chinensis). Auspicious clouds gather, toxins and wind pathogens are removed. The Thousand Gold formula is indeed effective, and the nine wan acres of Lan Cao dispel slander.
*Jiu Ge* (Nine Songs): "Vast and mighty are the Yuan and Xiang waters." *Li Sao* (Encountering Sorrow): "Braid autumn orchids to make a pendant." *Shi Shu* (Commentary on Poetry): "Bing Lan refers to the fragrant orchid grass." Emperor Jianwen of Liang's poem states: "Washing skirts, emerging from Leyou Park."
Ma Zhi stated: Its leaves are bifurcated, commonly called Yan Wei Xiang (Swallow Tail Fragrance). Li Shizhen stated: Flowers bloom in spikes, resembling Ji Su. The flowers are red and white. Emperor Jianwen of Liang's preface states: "Gathering like clouds, meeting like fog." *Book of Tang Biography Praise* states: "Sweeping like thunder, removing like wind." Fang Hui explained: "Ancient Lan Cao is exactly today's Qian Jin Cao (Thousand Gold Grass)." Lu You's poem states: "Two qing of land in Luoyang is indeed correct." Yang Shen stated: "The world takes plants resembling Xuan Pu as Lan Cao; the slander against the nine wan acres has lasted long."
