[Shennong Bencao Jing Zan · Shehan]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Slightly Cold. Indications: Mainly treats Jingxian (convulsions and spasms caused by fright or epilepsy). Treats pathogenic factors of cold and heat. Clears internal heat. Su Song stated: It grows on earth and rocks or in wetlands below. Tao Hongjing stated: Use the variety with fine leaves and yellow flowers. Li Shizhen stated: The root is named Nuqing. The leaves resemble Longya but are smaller, with a purple back. *Yi Yuan* records: Once, an old farmer saw one snake injured and another snake applying this herb to the wound; after a few days, the snake healed. *Baopuzi* records: She Xian Gao can reconnect already severed fingers. *Zhizhi Fang* records: Grinding and applying externally can cure stubborn tinea capitis and corporis. Lei Xiao's processing treatise states: Do not use those with cypress-tip-like leaves; they are called Jingming Cao, have an astringent and sour taste, cause hematemesis, and can be detoxified by taking Zhishi Zi quickly. There is also a mention of "suppressing the subtle and eliminating flaws" in *Huainanzi*.
[Shennong Bencao Jing Zan · Hengshan]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Indications: Mainly treats Shanghan (cold damage). Treats alternating chills and fever. Treats Wen Nue (warm malaria) with heat onset, and Guidu (diseases attributed to ghosts/toxicity affecting the mind/body). Treats phlegm accumulation in the chest. Treats vomiting and rebellious qi. Also known as Hu Cao. Grows in mountain valleys. (Currently known as Changshan / Dichroa Root).
The drug is named after the mountain, solemn like the Northern Peak (Hengshan). Stems are horizontal with nodes, round, bearing white flowers and green calyces. It directs towards dry yang and flows into damp yin turbidity. Chicken bone floats yellow; its function is specifically to cure malaria.
Li Shizhen stated: Hengshan is the name of the Northern Peak; did this drug originate there? Su Gong stated: The stem is round with nodes; in February, it produces white flowers and green calyces. When dried by exposure, it turns blue-white and is usable. If exposed to rain, it turns black, rots, and spoils. The *I Ching* states: Water flows to dampness; fire goes to dryness. Tao Hongjing stated: Those with small yellow fruits are called Jigu (Chicken Bone); they are the most effective for use. Su Song stated: This drug is the most important remedy for treating malaria.

(It is the young shoot of Hengshan / Dichroa febrifuga).
Why does Shuqi look toward Shu? The new shoots of Hu Cao. Rolled pills entangle; poured wine blends purely. Drives away gu poison and resolves toxicity. Defeats miasma and dissipates qi. Honey fragrance cools; sweet drinks attract each other.
*Book of Later Han* biography records: The emperor instructed Cen Peng saying, "Having pacified Long, now look toward Shu." Tao Hongjing stated: After harvesting Changshan shoots, tie them into knots for pills; those dried at the right time are best. Lei Xiao's processing treatise states: Soak in wine for one night, then sun-dry for use. Li Shizhen stated: In Lingnan, miasma is contracted through chills and fever; the pathogen resides in Ying and Wei. To eradicate the root cause, no drug is more suitable than this. Su Song stated: There is a local variety of Changshan shoot in Tiantai Mountain that tastes sweet; people use it as a beverage, also called Mixiang Cao. Its nature is cool and beneficial to humans, but it is not this specific shoot (Shuqi).
