Bai Shi (Platycladi Semen): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. It primarily treats palpitations and fright, calms the five Zang organs, tonifies Qi, and dispels dampness and bi-syndrome. Long-term consumption makes one radiant and beautiful in complexion, sharpens hearing and vision, prevents hunger, delays aging, lightens the body, and prolongs life. It grows in mountain valleys.
*Famous Physicians' Records* states: It is produced in Mount Tai; the leaves of the cypress are particularly effective. They should be harvested according to the directions in each of the four seasons and dried in the shade.
Note: *Shuowen Jiezi* says: "Cypress" is "Ju"; *Guaya* says: "Kuo" is "Cypress"; *Erya* says: "Cypress" means "mature". Guo Pu annotates *Liji*: "Chang yi ri..." [Text incomplete/variant]. *Fanzi Jiran* states: Cypress resin is produced in the Sanchu region. First-grade resin costs seven thousand coins per sheng; second-grade costs three thousand coins per dou.
Fu Ling (Poria): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. It primarily treats rebellious Qi in the chest and hypochondrium (recorded as hernia qi in *Taiping Yulan*), sorrow and indignation, fright and evil influences, palpitations with knotting and pain below the heart, alternating chills and fever, vexation and fullness, coughing and rebellious Qi, scorched mouth and dry tongue, and promotes urination. Long-term consumption calms the Hun (ethereal soul), nourishes the Shen (spirit), prevents hunger, and prolongs life. Also known as Fu Tu (*Taiping Yulan* records it as Fu Shen). Note: The original text states: Those that embrace the roots are named Fu Shen. The character "Hei" is likely an error or interpolation. It grows in mountain valleys.
Wu Pu states: Poria enhances spiritual clarity. Tong Jun considers its taste sweet; Lei Gong and Bian Que consider its taste sweet and non-toxic. Some grow under the roots of large pines in Maozhou, penetrating three zhang and one chi into the ground. Harvested on the seventh day of the second month (*Taiping Yulan*).
*Famous Physicians' Records* states: Those that embrace the roots are named Fu Shen, produced under large pines in Mount Tai, harvested in the second and eighth months, and dried in the shade.
Note: *Guaya* states: "Fu Shen" is "Fu Ling"; *Fanzi Jiran* states: "Fu Ling" is produced in Songshan and the Sanchu region. *Liexian Zhuan* states: Changrong collected Fu Ling and consumed it; Mr. Chu in *Shiji* cites a legend: "Below there is Fuling, above there is Tusizi." What is called Fuling is beneath the Tusizi, resembling the shape of a flying bird. Fuling is the root of a thousand-year-old pine; consuming it grants immortality. *Huainanzi · Shuilin Xun* states: When Poria is dug up, Tusizi dies. The old version wrote "Fu," which is incorrect.
