A prescription for treating various chronic coughs that do not heal.
*Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix), *E Jiao* (Colla Corii Asini, fried), *Kuan Dong Hua* (Flos Farfarae), *Su Qiao* (Pericarpium Punicae Granati, stir-fried with rice).
Mix the above ingredients in equal parts. Take 3 qian per dose, decocted with one *Wu Mei* (Fructus Mume), taken at midnight.
For treating asthma and urgency, inability to lie flat on the back, and profuse phlegm-saliva.
*Zhi Mu* (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), *Bei Mu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae).
Grind these two herbs into powder. Mix with warm boiled water and take before going to bed. If asthma is urgent, add powder of *Ku Ting Li* (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae); if chronic cough persists, add powder of *Dou Ling* (likely referring to *Zi Wan* or *Ma Dou Ling*, here used for stopping cough). If unavailable, substitute with *Su Qiao* (Pericarpium Punicae Granati), removing fibrous membranes without processing.
For resolving phlegm and stopping cough, applicable to all kinds of coughs regardless of age or duration (long-standing or recent).
*Ming Fan* (Alumen, calcined), *Chi Fan* (Alumen, calcined, each 1 liang), *Nan Xing* (Rhizoma Arisaematis, processed, 2 qian), *Bai Yao Jian* (Pilula Medicinalis Fermentata, 2 qian), *Wu Bei Zi* (Galla Chinensis, 1 qian, soaked overnight in rice wash water), *Zhu Ya Zao* (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 1 qian, skin and strings removed), *Wu Mei Rou* (Flesh of Fructus Mume, 2 qian, dried by stir-frying), *Ban Xia* (Rhizoma Pinelliae, processed, 2 qian).
Grind the above into powder, make pills with wheat paste the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose. For cold-type cough, take with light ginger soup before bed; for heat-type cough, take with clear tea before sleep.
*Ming Fan* (Alumen, calcined, 1 qian), *Nan Xing* (Rhizoma Arisaematis, half raw, half processed), *Ban Xia* (Rhizoma Pinelliae, processed).
Grind into powder, make small wutong seed-sized pills with ginger juice and wheat paste. Take 20-30 pills after meals with ginger soup.
Old version "Yi Nian Jin":
*Zhi Mu* (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 1 liang), *Bei Mu* (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 1 liang), *Ba Dou* (Semen Crotonis, 10 grains, oil removed).
Grind finely, mix evenly with the previous medicine powder. Take an amount equivalent to "one zi" (a very small measure) per dose. Dip three slices of ginger in the medicine powder, chew slowly while lying in bed, swallow, then sleep immediately to calm the asthma; diarrhea will occur the next day. Children use only half the dose.
For treating aphonia (loss of voice).
*Zao Jiao* (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, one stick, skin and seeds removed), *Luo Bo* (Radish/Raphanus Sativus, three pieces, sliced).
Decoct with one bowl of water until reduced to less than half a bowl. Drink this. Within three doses, voice will return.
For treating epistaxis (nosebleed), take half a cup of natural juice from fresh radish, mix with half a cup of wine, warm in hot water, and drink. Effective.
Another formula: Ash from burning clothes worn by women with fever, mixed with powder of *Xiang Fu* (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi), ground evenly, taken with "dian tang" (a type of medicinal drink).
Another formula: *Zhi Zi* (Fructus Gardeniae), any quantity, burned until carbonized but retaining efficacy, ground into powder, insufflated into the nose for immediate relief.
Another formula: Powder of *Yu Jin* (Radix Curcumae Longae) and *Bai Mao Hua* (Flos Imperatae Cylindricae), taken with decoction. Additionally, grease/dirt from cart wheels, formed into pills and inserted into the nostrils, is also excellent.
