When the eye first becomes afflicted, there is sudden, unbearable pain, tearing, and an inability to open the eye. A nebula (corneal opacity) resembling a black pearl appears on the black eye (pupil/cornea). If this condition occurs in adults, it is due to exhaustion of the Liver and Kidney, with toxic wind entering the eye. For such symptoms, acupuncture and moxibustion stimulation should not be used; instead, Bushen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) should be administered. If this condition occurs in children, it is due to excess heat and acute malnutrition syndrome (Ji Gan), and Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction) should be taken for recovery.
The poem states:
Black nebulae like pearls are arranged amidst the black water (aqueous humor); only skilled physicians know the difficulty of treatment.
Using divine eye drops can reverse the condition rapidly; taking decoctions or pills brings peace.
Do not force your gaze or pry open the eyelids with hands,
For fear that heavy pressure will cause green fluid (ocular discharge) to leak out.
Mediocre doctors who pierce the nebula and use cauterization make the path to seeing the three lights (sun, moon, stars, symbolizing clear vision) even more difficult.
Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction)
Ingredients: Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi), Asarum (Xixin), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Anemarrhena Root (Zhimu), Mirabilite (Mangxiao) (each 1 liang), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) (2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one cup of water, boil until reduced to five fen. Strain the dregs after meals and take warm.
When the eye first becomes afflicted, the onset is sudden with severe pain and tearing. White nebulae appear immediately, resembling pearls, jujube flowers, or fish scales sunken into steps. This is caused by accumulated heat in the Liver and Lung, where stagnation and excess rise upward to invade the brain, leading to this disease. It is crucial to take medicine for treatment without delay, lest the eye be damaged. It is advisable to apply Moding Gao (Head-Massaging Ointment) to the top of the head, then take Zhimu Yinzi (Anemarrhena Decoction), and concurrently take Shanyao Wan (Chinese Yam Pill) for immediate recovery.
The poem states:
White nebulae suddenly cluster around the pupil, dotting like flowers sunken into step-like scales.
The Liver and Lung harbor excessive stagnation and excess, rising to invade the brain as the root of the disease.
Massaging ointment on the head dispels wind and heat;
Decoctions remove Liver heat and must be taken frequently.
Refrain from alcohol, wheat products, and all toxic drugs;
Do not let trivial matters incite greed and anger.
