Gu distension is identical to Drum distension. It describes the abdomen as tight and full like a drum. It does not refer to Gu poison (a type of toxic accumulation).
Commonly referred to as Peng Ting (abdominal distension), it is also called Spider disease. The causes differ, but the manifestation is solely an enlarged and tense abdomen, while the skin and flesh elsewhere remain normal. Before distinguishing the specific syndrome, Muxiang Liqi Yin (Wood Fragrance Qi-Regulating Decoction) or Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Pill) are suitable.
This disease often develops gradually due to accumulation. Alternatively, it may occur when visceral Qi has not recovered after an illness, allowing pathogenic factors to invade via deficiency. One must absolutely avoid reckless purgation. For those with Qi urgency, Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending-Qi Decoction) is indicated; for the deficient, Gushen Jiahe San (Grain-God Plus Grain Powder) can be used, with Ban Qian (half qian) of Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) added, assisted by Fuyuan Dan (Restore-Yuan Pill).
If there is heat and urgency in the abdomen, or constipation, Beiji Wan (Emergency Rescue Pill) or Muxiang Binglang Wan (Wood Fragrance and Betel Nut Pill) are suitable. Alternatively, using Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) to unblock the bowels is the superior strategy.
If abdominal distension arises suddenly from dietary injury, refer to the Injury Section: Dietary Injury Syndrome.
For toxic-induced abdominal distension, use Jiedu Wan (Detoxification Pill) or Gandou Tang (Sweet Bean Decoction) as a temporary measure.
(Attached: Lower Bleeding)
Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness are pathogens that the feet frequently encounter, leading to Hongxiangjiao (Hongxiangjiao / Foot Qi Disease). Regardless of whether the pathogenic factors are recent or long-standing, dry or damp, or which meridian they belong to, Chushi Tang (Dampness-Removing Decoction) can be used, adding Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Binglang (Areca Seed), and Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), each half qian. Or Xiongzi Xiangsu San (Ligusticum, Angelica Dahurica, and Perilla Leaf Powder), adding Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root) and Bib Xia (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), each half qian. Swallow Mugua Wan (Chaenomeles Pill) simultaneously. This medication is suitable for regular consumption. When Hongxiangjiao attacks with unbearable pain in both feet, Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) is used, adding three to five Quanxie (Scorpion), decocted in wine.
If it is He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind), add two segments of Song Mu (Pine Wood) and Shan Mu (Cedar Wood) to Wuji San.
When Hongxiangjiao attacks, body pain and fever inevitably occur. Do not recklessly use medicines for Taiyang Disease (Cold Damage), because Hongxiangjiao resembles Taiyang Disease. If the onset is sudden with weak legs or insensibility in the lower abdomen, or general muscle spasms, or vomiting/nausea upon seeing food, or redness and swelling on both sides of the neck, it should be treated as Hongxiangjiao. For the dry type, add half qian of fried and ground Luobo Zi (Radish Seed) to the aforementioned two formulas. For the damp type, add ten or more slices of Qing Ju Pi (Green Tangerine Peel) to the aforementioned two formulas.
Remember: Hongxiangjiao must not be allowed to become cold below, nor should cold-natured medicines be used recklessly. Warmth leads to dissipation.
If Hongxiangjiao causes an ulcer at the heel, about half cun deep, with excruciating pain every half day, this is Hongxiangjiao Zhu Cheng Lou (Hongxiangjiao Abscess forming a Fistula). Burn Renzhong Bai (Human Tooth Ash) over fire until water exudes, then drip into the wound. For Hongxiangjiao with persistent fever, Baidu San (Defeat-Toxin Powder) is used, adding one qian of Mugua. Or mix Baidu San and Wuji San, half a dose each, evenly combined, named Jiaojia San (Cross-Added Powder), adding one qian of Mugua. If caused by long-term walking in dampness, resulting in swollen or ulcerated feet, administer Wuling San orally. Or Heqi Yin (Harmonizing-Qi Infusion), adding half qian of Mugua and Luobo Zi, and one qian of Dahuang.
For Hongxiangjiao causing urinary obstruction, take one dose of Shengliao Wuling San (Raw Material Five-Ingredient Poria Pill) and one dose of Chushi Tang, adding two qian of Mugua, divided into two heavy decoctions. If both urination and defecation are blocked, combine Wuling San with Fuyuan Tongqi San (Restore-Yuan Unblocking-Qi Powder).
For Hongxiangjiao causing panting and urgency, this indicates pathogen entering the interior. Suzi Jiangqi Tang or Chenxiang Jiangqi Tang (Sandalwood Descending-Qi Decoction) is suitable, assisted by Yangzheng Dan (Nourish-Righteous Pill) or Simo Yin (Four-Mortar Infusion).
When Hongxiangjiao presses on the Lung, causing coughing and wheezing, Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) is indicated. Add one qian of Binglang per dose, and re-decoct before taking.
For Hongxiangjiao causing aversion to food, Shengliao Pingwei San (Raw Material Stomach-Pacifying Powder) with one qian of Mugua is suitable. For vomiting, nausea, and disgust, Bawei Pingwei San (Eight-Ingredient Stomach-Pacifying Powder) with one qian of Mugua is suitable.
For chronic Hongxiangjiao, where the calves are withered and thin, alternating cold and heat, pain and itching, or unilateral weakness dragging the leg, resembling Bi Syndrome (Paralysis), Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Xu-Ming Decoction) with Mugua is suitable. Or Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Dorstenia Decoction), Fuzi Bawei Tang (Aconite Eight-Ingredient Decoction), swallowing Huoluo Dan (Unblock-Vessels Pill), or Hugu Sijin Wan (Tiger Bone Four-Jin Pills), etc. For Hongxiangjiao with Blood deficiency, Xiongzi Xiangsu San with added Mugua, Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root), and Chishao Yao is used. Similar formulas containing Xiongzi (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) and Baizhi are applicable.
For foot spasms, use Longjiao San (Dragon Gum Powder).
For sole pain, Dasheng San (Great Sage Powder) two qian, mixed with half qian (or one qian) of Mugua powder, taken with Doulin Jiu (Bean-Soaked Wine). Also wash with a decoction of Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), Xiang Baizhi (Fragrant Angelica Dahurica), and Caowu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root). For pregnant women with foot edema, use Zhiqiao San (Immature Bitter Orange Powder). See the Women's Section for details.
