In the seventh month, it begins to receive the essence of Wood to form its bones. The skin and hair are initially formed, the Hun (Ethereal Soul) wanders, and it can move its left hand. In this month, a male fetus moves towards the left rib, while a female fetus moves towards the right rib. By the seventh month, the fetus is fully formed with the shape of an adult, and some may be born at this time. Therefore, during pregnancy up to this stage, walking becomes difficult for the mother.
In the eighth month, it begins to receive the essence of Earth to form the skin. The body and skeleton gradually grow, all nine orifices are formed, the Po (Corporeal Soul) wanders, and it can move its right hand. In this month, the Zang-Fu organs are initially established, and all hair grows; the Yuan Shen (Original Spirit) descends, and the True Ling (Spiritual Essence) arrives.
In the ninth month, it begins to receive the essence of Stone to perfect the skin and hair. All joints are complete, and the body turns three times. In this month, food enters the stomach, the eyes have light, the nose breathes air, the ears hear sounds, and the mouth perceives tastes. The internal structures are arranged like a palace, determining the form of the newborn.
In the tenth month, the Qi is sufficient, and the Five Zang and Six Fu organs are complete. It gathers the Qi of Heaven and Earth into the Dantian. The joints and the Shen (Spirit) of the human body are all prepared, waiting for the proper time to be born. Those born when the months are full tend to be wealthy, noble, and long-lived; those born before the months are complete tend to be poor, humble, and short-lived.
The first month of pregnancy is called "Tai Pei" (Fetal Embryo). Diet must be refined, thoroughly cooked, sour, and sweet. Sexual intercourse should be avoided. Barley is suitable to eat, while fishy, pungent, and spicy foods should be avoided. This is referred to as "Cai Zheng." At this time, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian is contraindicated. The Liver governs the sinews and blood. In the first month, blood flow is sluggish and obstructed, so one should not engage in strenuous labor. Sleep must be quiet, and fear and dread should be prevented. During this period, menstruation ceases, and there is no tidal fever or pain. Medication should not be taken lightly. If the constitution is inherently weak or if there is a history of habitual abortion, any sign of discomfort requires immediate regulation, treatment, and prevention. Da An Tai Yin (Great Peace Fetus-Nourishing Decoction) is suitable.
Da An Tai Yin:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2 qian), Shudihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, unspecified amount), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, honey-fried), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, roasted), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, wine-fried), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci, salt-water fried), Tiaoqin (Radix Scutellariae, wine-fried), Sharen (Fructus Amomi, unroasted, husk removed), Sangjisheng (Ramulus Taxilli, each 1 qian), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, unspecified amount), Jingjie Sui (Spica Schizonepetae, each 5 fen).
Boil in 1.5 zhong of water until reduced to 0.7 zhong, then take orally.
If there is qi stagnation causing asthma, add 1 qian of Sugeng (Caulis Perillae).
The second month of pregnancy is called "Shi Gao" (Beginning of Paste). Avoid pungent and fishy-smelling foods. Residence must be in a quiet place, and sexual exertion should be avoided. Pain throughout the joints indicates the beginning of the fetus. In this month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian is contraindicated. The Gallbladder governs essence. In the second month, the fetus's essence forms in the Bao Luo (Uterine Cavity); it must be carefully protected and not disturbed. If Qi and Blood are insufficient and the fetal Qi initially becomes vigorous, it may reverse and disturb Stomach Qi, causing nausea, vomiting, and reduced appetite. Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) is suitable.
Banxia Tang:
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, white part removed, salt-water fried), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, ginger-processed, yellow-roasted), Fuling (Poria, each 1 qian), Ziqin (Radix Scutellariae, wine-fried), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried), Zisu (Folium Perillae, each 8 fen), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 5 fen).
