After pregnancy is confirmed and fetal movement is perceived, use a piece of cloth, six to seven inches wide and long enough to wrap horizontally around the waist twice. Bind it tightly around the waist until delivery, then remove it. This provides support to the lower back and lumbar region (腰膂) while the fetus is not yet fully developed, preventing injury from accidental falls. Upon labor onset, removing the binding allows the abdomen to relax, facilitating fetal turning. This is indeed a wonderful secret for protecting the fetus.
When a woman first conceives, a particle of essence and blood condenses into a grain, shaped like a dewdrop. This represents Taiji moving to generate Yang; "Heaven generates one as Water," termed Pei (Embryo). At this month, it has not yet entered the uterus (Gongluo), remaining between the vaginal opening and the abdominal cavity. If there are no symptoms of cold, heat, or pain, medication is unnecessary. Crucially, sexual activity must be avoided to prevent missed abortion (Anchan).
At one month of gestation, essence and blood approach Yang; the dewdrop turns red, resembling peach blossom petals. This represents Taiji stillness generating Yin; "Earth generates two as Fire," termed Tai (Fetus). It resides six to seven cun inside the vagina, having entered the abdominal cavity but not yet the uterine interior. Fetal movement may be intermittent, causing uncertainty. Vomiting and acid regurgitation clearly indicate pregnancy. Cravings for specific foods indicate deficiency in corresponding Zang organs. For instance, craving sour foods indicates Liver deficiency due to inability to nourish blood.
By the third month, the fetus resembles a silkworm cocoon, growing gradually. It is larger at one end and smaller at the other, slightly round, not yet in the uterus but reaching below the umbilicus, wrapped in a thin membrane. This corresponds to Qian Dao forming male and Kun Dao forming female, thus called Tai. The fetus moves most easily at this stage, requiring utmost protection.
By the fourth month, sex is distinguished. It begins receiving Jing of Water to form blood vessels; the body shape is initially complete, and the Six Fu Organs are smoothly formed. It has entered the uterine chamber, with the wrapping extending towards the Dantian area. Foods such as beef, horse, pork head, and other "fa du" (toxicity-inducing) substances should be avoided.
By the fifth month, it receives Jing of Water to form Qi; bones, sinews, limbs, and hair begin to develop. The fetus is stable within the uterus. Palpation reveals: if the shape resembles an inverted cup, it is a male; if irregular protrusions resembling elbows or necks appear, it is a female.
By the sixth month, it receives Jing of Metal to form sinews; mouth and eyes are formed. Male fetuses move on the left, females on the right. The fetus remains near the umbilicus, gradually rising, resembling a fish floating on water.
