During pregnancy, if the Spleen and Stomach functions are robust and Qi and Blood are abundant, the fetus will be secure, delivery will be smooth, and the child is likely to live a long life; why take medicine? If Qi and Blood are deficient, the Spleen and Stomach are weak, and appetite is poor, various deficiency syndromes will emerge.
One may experience infertility, or repeated miscarriages during pregnancy, or even external contraction of the Six Excesses (Six Pathogenic Factors) and internal injury from the Seven Emotions, depleting the True Yuan (Original Qi), all of which are causes of abortion. Therefore, Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) are the sacred medicines for calming the fetus, while Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Guidang (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) are excellent prescriptions for nourishing blood. Combined with Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), they can serve as daily medications. Before six months of pregnancy, the fetus's Qi and Blood circulation has not yet fully transformed; since Fuling (Poria) has a descending nature, it should not be used excessively. Huangqi (Astragali Radix) promotes fetal growth, so how can it be added routinely? Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) is suitable for adding in cases of fetal panting, but long-term use harms those with deficiency. Sharen (Amomi Fructus) stops vomiting and relieves pain, but excessive use moves blood and disturbs the fetus. A careful examination of Danxi’s theories reveals only a few words. There are merely three or four formulas for calming the fetus; if modified appropriately, success rates can reach eighty or ninety percent.
Symptoms of Cold Uterus include acid regurgitation, nausea and bloating, preference for warmth and aversion to cold, lower abdominal coldness with diarrhea, or a deep and fine pulse, accompanied by fetal insecurity. In such cases, Wenwei Yin (Warm the Stomach Decoction) or Liyin Jian (Nourish Yin Infusion) should be prescribed with modifications.
Wenwei Yin (Warm the Stomach Decoction)
Renshen (Ginseng Root) (1-2 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, honey-fried, 2 qian) Baidou (Euryales Semen, stir-fried, 2 qian) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, charred, 1-2 qian) Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 1 qian)
Guidang (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1-2 qian, omit if loose stools occur)
Decoct in water and take warm after meals.
If lower coldness with turbid discharge occurs, add Pogu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) 2 qian. For Qi stagnation, add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 7 fen. For abdominal pain, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 7 fen. For diarrhea, add Bidoukou (Cardamomi Fructus) 1 qian. If complicated by external pathogens or Liver/Kidney diseases, add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for severe cases, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian. For Spleen deficiency with sinking, add Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 3-5 fen. For damp-phlegm and fullness, add Fuling (Poria). For extreme Spleen and Stomach deficiency with incessant vomiting, double the dosage of Renshen and Baizhu.
Liyin Jian (Nourish Yin Infusion)
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (3-5 qian) Guidang (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2-3 qian) Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (1-2 qian) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take warm.
Alternatively, add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian. If both Spleen and Kidney are deficient, or if there is vomiting or bloating, add Fuling (Poria) 1-2 qian. For lower back and abdominal pain, add Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, fried until fibers break) and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) each 1 qian. For abdominal distension and painful stagnation, add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus) each 1 qian. If complicated by external pathogens, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian.
