Chen Xiuyuan stated: The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) records: "Diseases of the Two Yangs (referring to the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians) originate from the Heart and Spleen. If there are hidden grievances that cannot be voiced, women will experience amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). If the condition transmits to become 'Feng Xiao' (wind wasting, describing rapid emaciation), or transmits to become 'Xi Ben' (panting rush, describing急促 panting with upward rushing sensation), it is a death syndrome that is incurable." Ma Yuantai annotated: "The Two Yangs refer to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Stomach is the official responsible for receiving water and grain. If it fails to receive food, what is the cause? This arises from dysfunction of the Heart and Spleen. Precisely because of hidden grievances郁结 (depression/constraint) in the Heart, Heart Blood cannot be generated to nourish the Spleen Earth. The Spleen is also damaged by excessive overthinking, losing its function of transportation and transformation. Consequently, the Stomach fails to receive water and grain, leading to the withering of blood vessels and the cessation of menstrual flow. (Commentary: Here I have slightly added my own opinion.) I propose using Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction, a formula for replenishing Qi and Blood, strengthening the Spleen, and nourishing the Heart), heavily supplemented with Sheng Lurong (Raw Deer Antler, for tonifying Kidney Yang and benefiting Essence and Blood) and Lianxin Maidong (Ophiopogon with Heart, for clearing Heart heat and nourishing Yin). Taking more than twenty doses can lead to recovery. For severe depression, add Shaoyao (Peony Root, for nourishing Blood and softening the Liver) and Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, for soothing the Liver and resolving constraint). (Commentary: Mr. Chen divided one disease into two methods corresponding to two formulas; I have combined them. Guipi Tang has been listed previously, so it is not repeated here.)
'Feng Xiao' occurs when Fire pathogen is excessive and scorches the muscles, causing emaciation as fast as the wind. One should urgently rescue Stomach Yin. Use Guipi Tang added with Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, for clearing Heat and cooling Blood, nourishing Yin), Digupi (Cortex Lycii, for clearing deficient Heat), Xian Shihu (Fresh Dendrobium Stem, for benefiting Stomach and generating fluids), Baishao (White Peony Root, for nourishing Blood and astringing Yin), Zhe Jiang (Sugarcane Juice, for generating fluids and moistening dryness), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, for nourishing Lung Yin), and Baimi (White Honey, for tonifying the Middle and moistening dryness).
'Xi Ben' refers to急促 panting rushing upward, indicating that Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is about to collapse. (Commentary: When Qi is about to collapse, the pulse must first become extremely rapid, beating eight or nine times per breath cycle; I have witnessed this personally.) Mr. Chen attributed this to rebellious Stomach Qi and advocated using Maidong Tang, which is a major error. The *Jing* (Classic) states it is untreatable. In the absence of other practitioners, I prescribe Jiuyuan Tang (Rescue the Origin Decoction): Yeshanshen (Wild Ginseng Root, for massively tonifying Original Qi), Shanyurou (Cornus Fruit, for tonifying Liver and Kidney, astringing and securing), Zhi Heshouwu (Prepared Polygonum Multiflorum Root, for tonifying Liver and Kidney, benefiting Essence and Blood), Hei Jiangxiang (Black Aquilaria Wood, for moving Qi and activating Blood, ground and taken as a wash); Hu Tao Rou (Walnut Kernel, for warming Lungs, stabilizing panting, tonifying Kidneys, used with skin); Longgu (Dragon Bone, for calming Spirit and astringing); Bei Wuwei (Schisandra Berry, for astringing and securing, benefiting Qi and generating fluids); Zi Su Zi (Perilla Fruit, for descending Qi and transforming Phlegm); Ling Cishi (Magnetite, for anchoring Spirit and subduing Yang, decocted first with black water removed). If the patient's breathing becomes slightly calm after taking the medicine, they will not die. Once the panting subsides, switch to Lu Rong Maidong Guipi Tang (Deer Antler, Ophiopogon, and Restore the Spleen Decoction), adding Longgu (Dragon Bone) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry). (Commentary: This formula astringes and tonifies Original Qi, guiding it back to the Kidney. After taking it, if panting ceases, it indicates that Qi can still return to its source. However, among such cases, only one in a hundred survives; usually, it lasts only a few days. Those with congenital insufficiency will die within one or two days.)
