The *Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic* states: "When injured by wind, the upper part of the body is affected first." It also states: "Deficient evil and thieving wind (abnormal climatic factors that invade when the body's resistance is low) affect the Yang aspect first." Furthermore, it states: "If one maintains purity and stillness, the flesh and pores will close and resist; even with great wind and severe toxins, they cannot cause harm." Wind is the vast and dynamic Qi of heaven and earth. The changes of the eight winds across the four seasons are constant. Occasionally, people are injured by wind because they fail to follow the Dao of purity and stillness, resulting in insecure pores and deficiency of superficial Yang; this is the first cause. Some individuals have concurrent deficiency-phlegm and heat, causing Qi to be stagnant and depressed, making it easy for wind-evil to bind from the exterior; this is the second cause. In some cases, fire invades Lung Metal, scorching body fluids into phlegm; with phlegm-fire surging upward, wind naturally arises from within; this is the third cause. Contracting wind-disease does not exceed these three causes. A pulse that is floating and large indicates wind; floating and moderate indicates wind-injury with nasal congestion; floating, slippery, and large indicates internal heat generating wind. Treatment methods: For those with superficial deficiency contracting wind, dispersing methods are specifically appropriate, avoiding excessive sweating that leads to the loss of Yang. If there is sweating and the exterior pathogen remains, the exterior should be secured while dispersing the pathogen; Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is the main formula, with additions such as Cinnamon Twig and White Peony Root. For those with internal phlegm-heat combined with wind-evil, Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Leaf Decoction) or similar formulas are used. For those with phlegm obstruction and abundant fire, where internal heat generates wind, Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unblocking the Intestines and Stomach) or similar formulas are modified for regulation. Generally, nasal congestion with heavy voice, head distension and headache, clear nasal discharge, and aversion to wind belong to Cold syndrome; turbid nasal discharge with intermittent hot air, dry throat with cough, and thick sticky sputum belong to Heat syndrome. When external wind-evil needs dispersing and internal phlegm-fire is not yet resolved, Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Scutellariae Barbatae Radix (Huanglian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), and Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) or similar formulas are used to clear the lungs, descend fire, promote Qi movement, and eliminate phlegm.
Main Formula (for headache and nasal congestion): Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.7 fen); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared) (each 0.5 fen). Add three slices of fresh ginger and three green onion heads to the above, decoct in water.
If there is sweating and exterior pathogen, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba); if there is no sweating and aversion to wind, add Zisu (Perillae Folium) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix).
Shen Su Yin: Treats wind-injury and common cold, fever, headache, cough, and thick nasal discharge. Actions: Dispel pathogenic factors, clear Qi, eliminate phlegm, and remove heat.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zisuye (Perillae Folium), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (equal parts); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (half dose). Add fresh ginger and jujube to the above, decoct in water and take orally. If coughing, remove Renshen and Muxiang, add Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum); if lung heat, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Chuanxiong Chatiao San: Treats wind-injury, pathogenic factors attacking the head and eyes, nasal congestion, and heavy voice.
Ingredients: Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (4 liang), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (each 2 liang); Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with tea soup after meals.
