Any sores, swellings, and various toxins are invariably caused by the stagnation of Qi and blood. This is what is meant by "heat promotes movement, cold causes coagulation." It is also said: "Heat leads to free flow, cold leads to concretion." It is essential to use heat to attack it, thereby unblocking the Couli (skin pores and interstices) and smoothing the meridians, which is indeed a profound principle. The ancients had this method: decoct the herbs strongly to make a concentrated juice. If the sore is on the limbs, soak it; if on the waist or abdomen, wash it with the juice; if in the lower body, bathe it. Still, dip clean cloth in the juice and repeatedly pour/wash over the affected area, reheating it when it cools. Use it more than ten times a day, without stopping at night, for effectiveness. See the prescription below.
Releasing the exterior does not distance itself from hot-natured herbs; compressing and surrounding therapies also have the intent of dispersing. It is again said: Heat promotes movement, cold causes coagulation. One must not rely solely on cold and cooling herbs; one should adapt to Yin-Yang, cold, and heat as appropriate. If it is an extreme heat Yang syndrome, cooling herbs can be used, but mostly there is a combination with cold. If it is not extreme heat, treatment must follow warmth. If overly cold, it not only causes Qi and blood stagnation but also closes the Couli, allowing toxins to attack inward. When using surrounding medicines, one should only aim to consolidate the base, absolutely not applying medicine directly on the head of the sore to suppress it. This is what is meant by "avoiding its sharpness" (avoiding the enemy's peak strength).
For treating back carbuncles and other conditions, as well as pediatric erysipelas with red swelling that migrates unpredictably: Break fine porcelain into pieces, take one piece with a sharp edge, split the end of a bamboo chopstick about one cun, clamp the porcelain shard between the split ends, tie it securely with thread. Hold the tip of the chopstick lightly with two fingers, position the sharp edge about one cun away from the affected area, and strike the chopstick to prick the toxin. When blood comes out, it heals spontaneously. If healed this way, do not become negligent or slow. Otherwise, the toxin may enter the Pericardium, often leading to untreatable conditions. According to theory, the Heart belongs to Fire, and toxins also belong to Fire; like attracts like, so the toxin attacks the Heart exclusively.
Various toxins are suitable for needling this acupoint: On the medial side of the thumb, about the width of a leek leaf from the nail bed, needle approximately three fen. Press the area manually until bleeding occurs, then the swelling will subside. For severe cases or those with pus formation, moxibustion on the affected area is also required.
Main Prescription (Modified Baidu San / Decoction to Defeat Toxin): Treats carbuncles, furuncles, back carbuncles, mastitis, etc., presenting with aversion to cold and high fever, resembling Taiyang disease (Exterior Syndrome).
