The *Classic of Medicine* (Huangdi Neijing) states: When pathogenic factors are excessive, it manifests as an Excess pattern; when vital essence is depleted, it manifests as a Deficiency pattern. It also states: If a person suffers from worry and overthinking, the Heart will be damaged. Furthermore, it says: Being startled leads to excessive sweating, which injures the Heart.
Secular belief holds that illness caused by being assaulted by evil spirits, characterized by strange symptoms, auditory/visual hallucinations, and delirious speech, is indeed due to the depletion of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and deficiency/injury of Heart Blood. This is because the Heart is the residence of Shen (Spirit). The Classics state: The Heart stores Shen and serves as the Monarch Official, from whom Shen emerges. If the Monarch Heart loses its function, the twelve organs will each lose their proper governance. Consequently, vision, hearing, speech, and movement will all deviate from normalcy. Additionally, in desolate, quiet places or dark valleys, where mountain spirits may bewitch humans, or when men and women in households appear possessed by ghosts, one must understand that this only occurs in individuals who do not possess solid spirit and abundant Qi and Blood. The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) considers a pulse that is intermittently slow and rapid, large and small, as indicative of evil possession. Treatment should focus on expelling evil, warding off malignancy, calming the Spirit, and stabilizing the Heart.
Main Formula: Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 cun with nine nodes), Guijian (Araliae Chinensis Ramulus), Taonu (Dried Small Peach from trees in the twelfth lunar month), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen). Add seven slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) to the above, decoct together with gold and silver pieces, then mix in Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 1 qian), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) ground (5 fen). Take mixed orally.
Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) is suitable for administration (see formula under "Zhong Han" / Cold Damage). Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Powder) is suitable for administration and can be burned (see formula under "Gu Du" / Gu Poison). Burning various fragrant substances such as Tanxiang (Sandalwood), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) is recommended.
Qin Chengzu’s Moxibustion Method for Ghosts: Applicable to all cases of fright, mania, delirium, and assault by evil spirits. Restrain the patient firmly; first bind both arms, then use a thin rope to bind both thumbs together. Place large moxa cones on the nail beds and the fleshy corners of the two thumbs. Ignite at these four points, applying seven moxa cones per point. If any point is not ignited, the treatment is ineffective. Additionally, moxa can be applied to Renzhong (GV26) and Qizhong (CV8), one hundred cones each.
Simple Prescriptions: For sudden attack by the Five Corpse Evils. Pinch Renzhong (GV26) and pull the hair at the vertex. Blow powder made of Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) into the nose to induce sneezing. Alternatively, blow powder made from Zaoshixin Tu (Calcinatum Caulis Longan) into the nose. Or, use soot from the chimney, mixed with ginger juice and wine, and force-feed. Burn various incenses while having many people surround the patient; move the patient only after they regain consciousness. Take one egg, separate the white, and swallow it while shaking the body to promote downward movement of the medicine.
Another Prescription: Grind Taonu (Dried Small Peach) and Taodu (Peach Wood Borer) into powder, take with wine. Or crush Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) to extract juice and administer. Or, decoct a large amount of Tao Ren (Persicam Semen) and Tao Zhi (Peach Twig) to extract juice and administer.
Evil Interaction in Women: Honghuang (Realgar, 1 liang, finely ground) and Songxiang (Colophony, 2 liangs) are melted together, stirred evenly with a peach twig, and formed into pills the size of a bullet. These are burned for inhalation. The woman sits inside a heating basket (beilong), surrounded by curtains, leaving her head, face, and body exposed. The pills are burned underneath to fumigate her, thereby severing the evil influence.
