Wind is the Yang Qi of Heaven. The Classics state: "Deficient evils and thieving winds (abnormal climatic changes) are first received by Yang." Wind pathogen damages Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), so those with loose Cou Li (skin pores and interstitial spaces) are prone to wind diseases. Its symptoms include aversion to wind, sweating, floating pulse, headache, nasal congestion, heavy voice, cough with profuse phlegm, or aversion to cold with fever. Because individuals vary in the density of their Wei Qi and the depth of their contraction varies, symptoms present with varying severity. Treatment should not involve excessive diaphoresis (sweating therapy) nor premature tonification. One must observe deficiency and excess, assess severity, differentiate cold and heat, and conform to the seasons. The Classics state: "When wind prevails excessively, pacify it with pungent-cool substances, assisted by bitter-sweet ones." For those with strong constitutions, treat in spring and summer with pungent-cool methods, and in autumn and winter with pungent-warm methods, to release the muscle layer so that wind dissipates through sweat. For those with weak constitutions, secure the Wei Qi while simultaneously resolving wind pathogen, fearing that exclusive use of dispersing agents may cause excessive sweating and loss of Yang Qi. If initially wind combines with cold, pungent-warm releasing agents are appropriate; if stagnation transforms into heat over time, pungent-cool resolving agents are appropriate. Avoid using cold-cool herbs initially, which would prevent external pathogens from dispersing and trapped heat from venting, thereby severely injuring Lung Qi. For weak constitutions contracting wind with slight chills and fever, use Shen Gui Gui Zhi Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Cinnamon Twig Decoction) plus Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel). For wind damaging Lung and Wei, presenting with chills/fever, headache, cough, and epigastric stuffiness, use Chi Ju Tang (Fermented Soybean and Citrus Decoction). For wind damaging Ying and Wei, presenting with headache and tremors/tendon spasms upon coughing, use Dang Gui Jian Zhong Tang (Angelica Middle-Joint Building Decoction). For Taiyang wind strike, presenting with fever, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind, use Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). For wind strike causing headache, nasal congestion, and heavy voice, use Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San (Ligusticum Tea-Powder). For wind strike combined with cold, causing cough and fever, use Chai Chen Jian (Bupleurum and Tangerine Decoction). For wind-warmth damaging the Lung, causing body pain and epigastric obstruction, use Zhi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) plus Xiang Bei Mu (Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Yu Jin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf), and Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit). For summer-heat wind affecting the upper Jiao, causing phlegm-heat, wheezing, and cough, use Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) plus Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Xing Ren, Gua Lou, Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Chen Pi, and Hua Shi (Talcum). For wind combined with dampness, causing head/eye heaviness like being wrapped, thick phlegm, and chest stuffiness, use Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Hua Shi, Jie Geng, Xing Ren, and Gua Lou. For fire damaging wind, causing fire-stagnation dry cough and sore throat, use Gan Jie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) plus Bo He (Mint), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), and Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root). For heat damaging wind, causing cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and expectoration, use Xiao Feng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) modified. For wind pathogen externally closed, causing limb/joint vexing pain and internal trapped heat, use Qiang Huo San (Notopterygium Powder) modified. For epidemic colds, presenting with alternating chills and fever, wind strike without sweat, use Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Infusion), Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Detoxifying Powder), or Shen Zhu San (Atractylodes Powder). In summary, treating wind strike requires examining concurrent Six Evils (Wind, Cold, Summer-Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) symptoms. After resolution, if aversion to wind and spontaneous sweating persist, harmonize Wei and Ying Qi using Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction). Or, if exterior deficiency makes one susceptible to wind, solidify the Cou Li using Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder). This constitutes proper post-treatment prevention.
