Amnesia refers to the sudden forgetting of matters, where one cannot recall them even with strenuous mental effort. The residence of human spirit (Shen) is in the Heart; the essence of the Heart is rooted in the Kidney; and the brain is the mansion of the original spirit (Yuan Shen) and the sea of essence and marrow, which actually serves as the basis for memory function. Mr. Zhengxi Jin once said: "Whenever a person perceives something externally, an image must remain in the brain." Children who forget easily do so because their brains are not yet fully developed; the elderly who suffer from amnesia do so because their brains gradually become empty. Yinan stated: "Observing this, we can understand that when people memorize, they necessarily close their eyes and roll them upward to search for memories, which is also the principle of concentrating spirit in the brain." Therefore, treating amnesia requires the interaction between the Heart and Kidney, allowing the spirit of the Heart to descend and connect with the Kidney, and the essence of the Kidney to ascend to the Brain. Essence generates Qi, and Qi generates Spirit; when the spirit is settled and Qi is clear, there will naturally be few instances of forgetting.
However, if amnesia is caused by disease:
If it is due to deficiency of essence and blood, one must cultivate and tonify the Liver and Kidney, using Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) added with Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) and Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae).
If it is due to excessive rumination, one should specifically nourish the Heart and Spleen, using Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction).
If it is due to shortness and scarcity of spirit, one should simultaneously tonify Qi and Blood, using Renshen Yangying Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Constitution Decoction) administered with Yuanzhi Wan (Polygala Pill).
If it is excess above and deficiency below, use Yangxin Tang (Nourish the Heart Decoction).
If it is deficiency above and excess below, use Longyan Tang (Longan Decoction).
If Heart Fire does not descend and Kidney Water does not ascend, leading to unsettled spirit, use Zhuque Wan (Vermilion Bird Pill).
If there is pre-existing phlegm-fluid retention, use Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction).
If phlegm confuses the orifices of the Heart, use Daotan Tang (Expel Phlegm Decoction) administered with Shouxing Wan (Auspicious Star Pill).
If mental labor and reading lead to spiritual trance, use Anshen Dingzhi Wan (Calm the Spirit and Stabilize Will Pill).
If Heart Qi is insufficient, accompanied by palpitations and amnesia, use Chensha Miaoxiang San (Cinnabar Wonderful Fragrance Powder).
If constitutional endowment is insufficient, leading to vacuous disturbance of spirit and will, use Dingzhi Wan (Stabilize Will Pill) or Kongsheng Zhenzhong Dan (Confucius' Pillow Treasure Elixir).
If the spirit declines due to old age, use Jiajian Guben Wan (Modified Root-Securing Pill).
If blood stasis exists internally, causing a tendency to forget and behavior resembling madness, use Daidang Wan (Substitute Dang Pill).
