The pulse of injury by dampness is fine and soggy; the pulse of damp-heat is slow and large. A floating and slow pulse indicates dampness in the exterior, while a deep and slow pulse indicates dampness in the interior. The pulse of dampness is deep and fine, resembling that of Jing disease (a syndrome characterized by stiffness of the neck and back, and opisthotonos), but the symptoms differ: in dampness, there is body pain, whereas in Jing disease, there is no body pain. A string-taut and slow pulse indicates wind-dampness combusting with each other; body pain with a deep pulse indicates middle dampness; a floating pulse indicates wind-dampness; a deficient and choppy pulse indicates cold-dampness; when dampness flows into the joints, the whole body suffers from pain. A deep and fine pulse indicates middle dampness or Shi Bi (Bi syndrome caused by dampness obstruction). In wet-warmth disease, the Yang pulse (Cun position) is soggy and weak, while the Yin pulse (Chi position) is small and rapid.
