Pulse patterns of Fire present as surging (Hong) and rapid (Shu); if deficient, the pulse floats. The *Mai Jing* (Classic of Pulse Diagnosis) states that the nature of Fire is like a raging fire; when suppressed, it appears empty. Therefore, when Fire is excessive, the pulse feels surging and large upon light palpation (floating), soft and broad upon moderate pressure, and hollow upon heavy pressure. A pulse that is surging and fills the fingers indicates Excess Fire; a pulse that is rapid and large but forceless indicates Deficient Fire. Aversion to cold with shivering, accompanied by a small and hidden pulse, indicates Stagnant Fire. A pulse that is wiry (Xian) and thin (Xi) with a rapid rate, becoming harder upon deep pressure, indicates the decline of Lesser Fire Qi, revealing the True Pulses of the Liver and Kidneys; this is not caused by Fire itself, but is a critical sign of severe Consumption Disease (Xu Lao). Alternatively, a pulse that is deficient, large, and rapid indicates that Blazing Fire has consumed Qi, exhausting True Yin, presenting as a phenomenon of Floating Yang flying away. If such a pulse appears in a chronic illness, fewer than one in a hundred will survive; only in cases of sudden collapse of Yuan Qi can strong tonification be used to consolidate and secure it. A pulse that is surging but becomes solid upon heavy pressure indicates有形 Damp-Heat, unrelated to Fire. (From *Zhang Shi Yi Tong*)

Independently crush the two stones to bean-sized particles, place in a silk bag, immerse in the liquid, decoct over low heat until foam rises. Insert chopsticks; if white snow-like crystals adhere to the chopsticks, immediately pour into a basin. Wait to solidify, take out, and dry in the sun. For accumulated heat causing persistent chest oppression, take one fangcun bi (square inch scoop) of powder, mix with 1 he of white honey and 5 he of cold water, stir to dissolve, and drink at once. Twice daily, stop when heat subsides.
