A pulse that is rapid and deficient indicates Lung Consumption (Fei Wei); a pulse that is rapid and excess indicates Lung Abscess (Fei Yong). A pulse that is slightly tight and rapid indicates that pus has not yet formed; a pulse that is very tight and rapid indicates that pus has already formed. Coughing up pus resembling rice porridge is difficult to treat. Vomiting pus continuously, especially if the pulse is floating, large, and surging, is difficult to treat. In Lung Consumption (Fei Wei), the six pulses may present as floating, choppy, and urgent, or fine and rapid without spirit; this indicates death. After the rupture of a Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), a short and choppy pulse is contraindicated. If the pulse is slow and slippery with a white complexion, survival is indicated; if the pulse is wiry and urgent with a red complexion, death is indicated.
