也,是为五运。”)帝曰∶其于三阴三阳合之奈何?鬼臾区曰∶子午之岁,上见少阴;丑未之岁,上见太阴;
In years of Bing and Xin, the Water Yun (Five Movements) governs; in years of Ding and Ren, the Wood Yun governs; in years of Wu and Gui, the Fire Yun governs. (Note: Zhang Jingyue states: "This is the correspondence of the Five Elements to the Heavenly Stems, which constitutes the Five Movements.") The Yellow Emperor asked: How do they combine with the Three Yin and Three Yang (Shaoyin, Taiyin, Shaoyang, Yangming, Taiyang, Jueyin)? Gui Yuzhou replied: In years of Zi and Wu, the upper position manifests Shaoyin (Ministerial Fire); in years of Chou and Wei, the upper position manifests Taiyin (Damp-Earth); in years of Yin and Shen, the upper position manifests Shaoyang (Ministerial Fire); in years of Mao and You, the upper position manifests Yangming (Dryness-Metal); in years of Chen and Xu, the upper position manifests Taiyang (Cold-Water); in years of Si and Hai, the upper position manifests Jueyin (Wind-Wood). (This is the correspondence of the Three Yin and Three Yang to the Earthly Branches, which constitutes the Six Qi. The term "upper" refers to the Si Tian (Heavenly Sovereign) Qi; for example, in Zi and Wu years, the upper position manifests Shaoyin as Si Tian. This applies to all twelve years.) Shaoyin is referred to as the Biao (Mark/Beginning), and Jueyin is referred to as the Zhong (End). ("Biao" means beginning. "Zhong" means termination. The order of Yin and Yang over sixty years begins with Zi and Wu, hence Shaoyin is called the Biao; it ends with Si and Hai, hence Jueyin is called the Zhong." The New Corrected Text notes: "Upon detailed examination, years of Wu, Wei, Yin, You, Xu, and Hai are Zheng Hua (Direct Transformation), representing the substantial reality of the governing transformational command; years of Zi, Chou, Shen, Mao, Chen, and Si are Dui Hua (Counter Transformation), representing the virtual aspect of the governing transformational command. This is the general principle.") Above Jueyin, Wind Qi dominates; above Shaoyin, Heat Qi dominates; above Taiyin, Dampness Qi dominates; above Shaoyang, Ministerial Fire Qi dominates; above Yangming, Dryness Qi dominates; above Taiyang, Cold Qi dominates. This so-called Ben (Root) is called the Liu Yuan (Six Origins). ("The Three Yin and Three Yang are primarily governed by the transformations of the Six Qi: Wind transforms Jueyin, Heat transforms Shaoyin, Dampness transforms Taiyin, Fire transforms Shaoyang, Dryness transforms Yangming, Cold transforms Taiyang. These transformations generate each other, thus the Six Qi are called the Ben, and the Three Yin and Three Yang are called the Biao. However, these six all originate from the one Qi of Tian Yuan, divided into six, hence called the Six Origins. The title of this chapter, 'Tian Yuan Ji', derives its meaning from this.") The Yellow Emperor said: How radiant is the Dao! How clear is this discourse! Please inscribe it on jade tablets and store it in golden caskets, naming it *Tian Yuan Ji*.
