Chart of Tianfu and Suihui (Image)
Chart of Tianfu and Tong Sui (Image)
The Classic states: When the Yearly Movement (Sui Yun) is excessive, the climate arrives early; when it is deficient, the climate arrives late. This is the normal pattern for observation. However, the reason for arriving early or late is that the six sectors of climate arrive before or after their proper positions. The difference in the timing of the transitions (Jiao Si) is thirteen days, corresponding to each other, which can be known by observing the growth and storage of all things. These are referred to as differences in quantity. If the Five Movements (Wu Yun) are neither excessively excessive nor excessively deficient, their Qi arrives at the appropriate time, which is called a year of Balanced Qi (Ping Qi). Although they all arrive according to schedule, upon detailed deduction, their functions differ, so this must be thoroughly understood. Thus, the Classic says: Changes in movement vary in quantity, diseases manifest with varying severity, and life and death occur at different times; this is what is meant.
The Song states: When the Movement matches the Heavenly Transformation, it is called Tianfu (Heavenly符); when the Movement coincides with its own Earthly Branch position, it is called Suiwei (Year Position). In years of Chou, Wei, Wu, and You, the Movement matches Heaven; these are years of Suihui and Taiyi Tianfu. Excessive movements adding below match Tianfu.
Chart of Suihui and Taiyi Tianfu (Image)
Chart of Suihui (Image)
For various Movements matching Heavenly Transformations: Wood Movement above meets Jueyin; Fire Movement above meets Shaoyin; Earth Movement above meets Taiyin; Metal Movement above meets Yangming; Water Movement above meets Taiyang. In all these cases, the Movement and the Si Tian (Guest Qi) transformation agree, called Tianfu, meaning union. Wood Movement meeting Mao; Fire Movement meeting Wu; Metal Movement meeting You; Water Movement meeting Zi; Earth Movement meeting Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei—these are often the positions of the original branches, hence called Suiwei. Another name is Suihui, meaning the Movement coincides with the branch. Another name is Suizhi, meaning the Movement directly faces the branch. Zhi means governing or arriving; Chen means Earthly Branch. In Ji Chou and Ji Wei years, Ji is Earth Movement, Chou and Wei belong to Earth, above sees Taiyin Earth. In Wu Wu year, Wu is Fire Movement, Wu also belongs to Fire, above sees Shaoyin Fire. In Yi You year, Yi is Metal Movement, You also belongs to Metal, above sees Yangming Metal. However, within sixty years, these four years have Movement and Year Branch consistent, forming a Triple Union (San He), also called Huihe Er Nian. The "Three" in Sui refers to the Movement and Year combining as Taiyi Tianfu, hence the text below mentions including six years of Suihui and Taiyi Tianfu. The Classic does not mention Suihui alone but only Taiyi Tianfu because stating the general principle makes Suihui understandable. However, Taiyi Tianfu is the title of the superior one. In Geng Zi and Geng Wu years, Metal Movement adds below to Yangming Metal. In Ren Shen and Ren Yin years, Wood Movement adds below to Jueyin Wood. In Jia Xu and Jia Chen years, Earth Movement adds below to Taiyin Earth. However, within sixty years, these six years are called Tongtianfu (Same-as-Heaven Fu), also having the same transformation as Tianfu. For deficient years, adding below matches Suihui in the four Meng (beginning) years, where the Branch matches the Movement. In Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Water Movement adds below to Taiyang Water. In Gui You and Gui Mao years, Fire Movement adds below to Shaoyin Fire. In Gui Hai and Gui Si years, Fire Movement adds below to Shaoyang Fire. However, within sixty years, these six years are called Tong Suihui (Same-as-Year Fu), also having the same transformation as Suihui. Suihui is also called Suiwei or Suizhi; the meaning is one, but there are two names, which must be understood. Ren is Wood Movement, above meeting Yin Wood; Gui is Fire Movement, above meeting Si Fire; Geng is Metal Movement, above meeting Shen Metal; Xin is Water Movement, above meeting Hai Water. However, within sixty years, these four years are called Zhidefu (Branch Virtue Fu) or Gandefu (Stem Virtue Fu), implying the presence of pathogenic factors. Furthermore, Ren Yin year is Tongtianfu and Zhidefu; Gui Si year is Tongtianfu, Suihui, and Zhidefu; their applications differ, so this must be understood.
If Shaojiao (Minor Wood) is excessive, Dryness Metal will overcome it. Wuzi Yuanjian states: In Ding Hai years, the first month builds Yin; Ding combines with Ren, sharing Wood Movement, thus achieving balance, so Metal cannot overcome it. Additionally, "Fu Pei" means契合 (coincidence/fitting together).
For the Qi and Movement of any given year, the transition to the First Qi of the year occurs on the day of Major Cold (Da Han) mid-Qi of the preceding year. Shen, Zi, Chen three years are the same, transitioning at 1/4 hour into Yin; Si, You, Chou three years are the same, transitioning at 1/4 hour into Si; Yin, Wu, Xu three years are the same, transitioning at 1/4 hour into Shen; Hai, Mao, Wei three years are the same, transitioning at 1/4 hour into Hai. These four years constitute one "Water Tong," reflecting the meaning of San He.
Ding years have deficient Wood; Gui years have deficient Fire; Ji years have deficient Earth; Yi years have deficient Metal; Xin years have deficient Water. For these five deficient Movements, the element that overcomes them comes to attack. When the Ji Qi is weak and disaster occurs, if during the Qi transition at Da Han of the preceding year, the Ding Stem matches the Year Movement Stem, they assist each other, clearing the Movement, resulting in a Ping Sui (Balanced Year). In such cases, there are no months of overcoming disasters. Jia combines with Ji, Yi with Geng, Bing with Xin, Ding with Ren, Wu with Gui; these are the monthly Gan De Fu (Stem Virtue Fu), collectively called Gandefu. All the above are collectively called Ping Yun Sui (Balanced Movement Years) (including Tianfu, Suihui, Taiyi Tianfu, Tong Suihui, Zhidefu, Gandefu, etc.). These are all years of Balanced Movement. Thus, Qi transformation and movement operation are all Balanced Movement years; Qi and Movement transformations arrive on schedule; the growth and storage of things, as well as human pulse patterns, all follow the Heavenly Qi without early or late deviations. Detailed deduction reveals this clearly.
Old Classic Chart of Sixty-Year Movement Changes (Image)
Although these years are Balanced Movements, their effects of excess and deficiency still differ. How is this demonstrated? If deficient years encounter Tianfu, Suihui, Tong Suihui, Zhidefu, Gandefu, etc., assisting each other, they achieve peace and do not decline, so the Five Transformations communicate freely without overcoming changes. If excessive years encounter Tianfu, or Suihui, Tianfu, Zhidefu, Gandefu, etc., assisting each other, their Qi becomes even more excessive. How could there be no overcoming changes? Then, although there may be no Sheng Fu (Overcoming-Revenge) changes, variations are inevitable. Thus, the Classic states: In years of Excessive Fire, above meeting Shaoyang and Shaoyin, fire blazes, springs dry up, objects scorch and wither; symptoms include delirium, mania, coughing, wheezing, severe lower body bleeding, exhaustion of Taiyuan pulse leads to death. It also states: In years of Excessive Water, above meeting Taiyang, rain, ice, frost, and snow fall irregularly, dampness alters things; people suffer abdominal distension and pain, borborygmus, loose stools, indigestion, thirst, and confusion; exhaustion of Shenmen pulse leads to death. Regarding the Ji of Hexi (Brilliance), Clouds ascend, and Gathering Qi lags; policies become violent, Storage Qi retaliates, sudden cold and gloom appear, hail and heavy rain fall, Cold Evil damages the Heart. Regarding the Ji of Liuyan (Overflowing), Clouds are Yu, and Growth Qi fails to transform; excessive policy causes Transformation Qi to surge, dust and haze mix, heavy rains fall frequently, Evil damages the Kidney. All such cases are Tianfu years. It also states: Taijiao (Major Wood) above meets Shang (Metal), causing Qi reversal; reversal leads to vomiting and diarrhea; failing to cultivate virtue, Gathering Qi retaliates, Autumn Qi becomes harsh, severe肃杀 (killing/cold) occurs, Clear Qi arrives greatly, grass and trees wither, Evil damages the Liver. However, Taijiao above meeting Shaoyang means adding below to Jueyin, called Tongtianfu. All the above are Balanced Movement years. Since records state this, how can it be said that Balanced Movement years have no Sheng Fu changes? This principle is clear and unassailable.
