Each Qi (a phase of six solar terms) lasts for sixty days and eighty-seven and a half ke (time units), at which point the next Qi begins. For example, in the Gui-Chou year, the First Qi begins at the first fen (minute) of Si hour, totaling twenty-six ke. A year consists of sixty days, plus the remainder from the Qi calculation and the large surplus, along with an additional eighty-seven and a half ke. The First Qi starts counting from the first fen of Si hour; one shichen (two-hour period) equals eight ke and twenty fen. Counting up to Yin hour (from Si to Yin), it totals eighty ke, falling short by seven and a half ke. At Si hour there are twenty fen, at Wu hour twenty fen, and at Wei hour twenty fen, totaling sixty fen. Upon reaching Wei hour, one more ke is added, making it eighty-one ke. Additionally, at Shen hour there are twenty fen, at You hour twenty fen, and at Xu hour twenty fen, forming another ke, totaling eighty-three ke. Four ke are taken at Zi hour, totaling eighty-seven ke. The remaining half-ke consists of twenty fen at Hai hour and ten fen at Zi hour, totaling thirty fen, which constitutes half a ke. The Second Qi begins to the right of mid-Zi hour.
Starting from the left of mid-Zi hour, there are four ke and ten fen. From Chou hour to Xu hour, there are ten positions; each position accounts for eight ke and twenty fen, so ten positions total eighty ke. From Zi hour to Xu hour, there are eighty-four ke, with an additional shortage of three and a half ke. Chou, Yin, and Mao hours each have twenty fen, totaling sixty fen. Chen, Si, and Wu hours add another ke. Wei, Shen, and You hours each have twenty fen, adding yet another ke, totaling eighty-seven ke, minus half a ke. The previous ten fen at Zi hour and the current twenty fen at Xu hour total thirty fen, constituting half a ke. Thus, totaling eighty-seven and a half ke, the Third Qi is established.
The first three Qis belong to the division of Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire). They end at twenty fen of Xu hour. Starting from the first fen of Hai hour, extending to the end of Shen hour, covering ten positions, they total eighty ke. Hai, Zi, and Chou hours each have twenty fen, forming one ke. Yin, Mao, and Chen hours each have twenty fen, adding another ke. Si, Wu, and Wei hours add yet another ke, totaling eighty-three ke, with a remaining shortage of four and a half ke. Four ke are taken at You hour; twenty fen at Shen hour and ten fen at You hour total thirty fen, constituting half a ke. The transition occurs to the right of mid-You hour.
Starting from the left of mid-You hour, beginning with four ke and ten fen, counting from Xu hour to Wei hour covers ten positions, totaling eighty ke. Each position has twenty fen. Zi hour adds one ke, Mao hour adds one ke, and Wu hour adds one ke, totaling eighty-seven ke, minus half a ke. The previous ten fen at You hour and the twenty fen at Wei hour total thirty fen, constituting half a ke, amounting to eighty-seven and a half ke. The transition occurs at twenty fen of the end of Wei hour.
