The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian originates at the tuft of hair on the big toe, ascends along the medial margin of the dorsum of the foot, one cun lateral to the medial malleolus, and eight cun above the ankle, where it crosses posterior to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. It then ascends along the medial aspect of the thigh, enters the pubic region, passes around the external genitalia, reaches the lower abdomen, flanks the stomach, connects with the Liver (Liver), and links with the Gallbladder (Gallbladder). It pierces the diaphragm, spreads through the hypochondriac region, follows the posterior aspect of the pharynx, enters the nasopharynx (Hangsang), connects with the optic nerve system (Muxi), emerges above the forehead, and meets the Du Vessel (Governor Vessel) at the vertex. A branch descends from the optic nerve system to the inner cheek, encircling the interior of the lips. Another branch diverges from the Liver, pierces the diaphragm, and ascends to pour into the Lung (Lung). When this meridian is disturbed, symptoms include low back pain with inability to bend or extend, hernia in men, and swelling of the lower abdomen in women. In severe cases, there is dryness of the throat, a dusty complexion, and loss of luster. Diseases generated by the Liver include chest fullness, vomiting and regurgitation, undigested food diarrhea, fox hernia, urinary incontinence, and stranguria. These conditions arise from disorders of this meridian.
This passage describes the circulation of Qi in the Liver Meridian, which is the twelfth of the twelve meridians. The transverse crease behind the hair tuft on the big toe is called Jumaohui (Ju Mao); the inner thigh is Gu; the area below the umbilicus is Xiaofu; and the deep part inside the eye is Xi. Hangsang refers to the pharynx and nasopharynx. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian starts at Dazhun (LR13) at the hair tuft of the big toe, ascends along the medial margin of the foot, passing through Xingjian (LR2) and Taichong (LR3), reaching Zhongfeng (LR4) one cun anterior to the medial malleolus. From Zhongfeng, it ascends past the ankle, crosses Sanyinjiao (SP6), passes Ligou (LR5) and Zhongdu (LR8), ascends another cun, crosses posterior to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and moves up the medial thigh. It passes through Xiguan (not a standard point, likely referring to anatomical location), Ququan (LR8), Yinbao (LR9), Wuli (LR10), and Yinlian (LR11) along the medial thigh. It arrives at the Chongmen (SP12) and Fushhe (SP13) regions, enters the pubic hair area, where left and right meridians intersect, surrounding the genitalia, reaching the lower abdomen. It then converges at Qugu (CV2), Zhongji (CV3), and Guanyuan (CV4), follows Zhangmen (LR13), and reaches Qimen (LR14). At Qimen, it flanks the stomach, belongs to the Liver, and links downward to the Gallbladder at Riyue (GB24). From Qimen, it ascends through the diaphragm, running outside Shisou (ST16), inside Dabao (SP21), and spreading through the hypochondriac region. It ascends between Yunmen (LU1) and Yuanye (GB2), lateral to Renying (ST9), follows the posterior pharynx, enters the nasopharynx, runs lateral to Daying (ST5), Dicang (ST4), Sibai (ST2), and Yangbai (GB14), connects with the optic nerve system, emerges above the forehead, runs inside Toulinqi (GB15), and meets the Du Vessel at Baihui (GV20) on the vertex. Its branch descends from the optic nerve system, running outside the Ren Vessel (Conception Vessel) and inside the main meridian, descending to the inner cheek, crossing and encircling the interior of the lips. Another branch diverges from the Liver at Qimen, pierces the diaphragm, runs outside Shisou and inside the main meridian, ascends to pour into the Lung, descends to the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), flanks Zhongwan (CV12), and connects with the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. When pathology manifests at these active points, symptoms such as hernia appear according to the meridian's pathway. Since the Liver communicates with the Kidney (Kidney), low back pain is commonly observed.
