Gao Gufeng treated the wife of Wu Canxia, who was pregnant and suffered from chest and abdominal distension, loss of appetite, thirst, and dysentery. The physician administered digestive aids and cold-natured medicines, which worsened the condition and endangered the fetus.
Gao said, "This resulted from drinking cold water after meals." (The pulse must be deep, slow, and soggy.) He prescribed a large dose of Lizhong Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Dried Ginger Decoction), and she recovered completely after several doses.
Another woman suffering from internal injury (deficiency-type illness) was eight months pregnant. She had high fever, thirst, and a scorched black tongue coating. The physician treated her with cold-natured medicines. Gao said, "Regardless of whether it is internal injury, even if it were a Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) or Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) pattern, one must first secure the fetus before attacking the pathogen. Now, both hands show a rapid and excessively large pulse, indicating extreme deficiency-heat. Using cold medicines again forces Yang to be constrained by Yin; how can this last?" He prescribed Zishen Shenggan Yin (Nourish Kidney and Generate Liver Infusion). After one dose, the fever subsided, and she recovered after continuing with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman who, due to food stagnation, took Zhizhu Wan (Immortelle and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill), resulting in chest and abdominal discomfort and reduced food intake. Taking small amounts of digestive and qi-regulating medicines caused the fetus to feel as though it would fall. This was because Spleen Qi was deficient and unable to support the fetus. He used Buzhong Yiqi Tang and Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). As Middle Qi gradually strengthened, the fetus stabilized. She was then regulated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) until cured.
Another pregnant woman had food stagnation causing heart and abdominal pain and distension. Someone prescribed Renyang Rong Tang (Ren Shen Nourishing the Vigor Decoction) with Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Perforatus), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). The distension worsened, the fetus pressed upward, nausea prevented eating, and the right Guan position pulse was floating and large but wiry upon pressure. This indicated insufficient Spleen Earth being overacted upon by Liver Wood. She was cured using Liujunzi Tang plus Chaihu and Shengma. Later, when she experienced lower abdominal fullness, she recovered after using Buzhong Yiqi Tang to raise the Spleen Qi.
Wei Yuheng stated: Yao Jiatian's wife, in her thirties, tall and fair-skinned, had lost her first two sons. Subsequent pregnancies ended in miscarriage, and now she suffered severely from morning sickness (emesis gravidarum). Her pulse was deficient, soft, and large. I gave her Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and she gradually stabilized. She also experienced intermittent pain in the waist, abdomen, legs, and feet. Sometimes I added Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba); sometimes Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), and Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), up to an ounce. If there was a bearing-down sensation, I used one or two doses of Buzhong Yiqi Tang, substituting Shudi and Shan Yao for Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). If she occasionally had chest and abdominal pain, slight use of Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Baizhu would cause the Middle Qi to feel surging and agitated. This was primarily due to long-term deficiency of Ying and Blood, making aromatic-dry herbs entirely unsuitable. How could one discuss treatment methods with those who rigidly adhere to formulas? After taking hundreds of doses, she delivered a healthy boy at term.
Hu Ganruo's wife, in her twenties, had been married for years without conception. While visiting her father-in-law, she sought consultation. I said, "You are pregnant, but the Three Yin meridians (Foot-Shaoyin Kidney, Foot-Taiyin Spleen, Foot-Jueyin Liver) are all deficient." She replied, "It may not yet be confirmed pregnancy; currently, I suffer from night fever, cough, abdominal pain, loose stools, and difficulty walking with my left foot." I asked if the abdominal pain radiated internally and externally, if her waist always hurt, and if the tendons in her leg felt short and unrelaxed. I also asked if she swelled in the afternoon. She answered, "All as you described." Thus, deficiency of the Three Yin was undeniable. I prescribed Gouqi, Dihuang, Danggui, Baishao, Shashen, and Maidong, instructing her to take fifty doses, and another twenty doses near term, to prevent future complications. After taking more than ten additional doses, the illness resolved, and she stopped medication. Later, during labor, she fainted, and fainted again postpartum. Specialists attributed her alternating chills and fever to Shaoyang disorder and prescribed Chaihu and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for abdominal pain and loose stools, they gave Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) and Baizhu. This caused her body to break out in white miliaria (prickly heat), fine as sesame seeds and coarse as mung beans. Severe abdominal pain forced her to lie prone with a rush mat on her abdomen, finding slight relief only by rotating left and right. Her pulse was wiry, urgent, and rapid; her tongue was black and dry. This was Liver Fire attacking the severely damaged Three Yin meridians. I instructed her to take the previous formula supplemented with Shudi, Chuanlian, Baishao, and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). She recovered after several doses.
The following year, she suffered from dysentery, which was cured by physicians using dysentery-specific medicines. The year after that, she had abdominal pain and loose stools, identical to her symptoms during the initial pregnancy of the previous year. The former physician was summoned but still diagnosed dysentery, strictly employing purgative and attacking methods, resulting in fetal expulsion and death. There were also three sisters surnamed Zhang, who each experienced abdominal pain and diarrhea during every pregnancy, which ceased only after delivery. Although this involved fetal Qi, it was also caused by Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth.
