In the Jiayou era, Emperor Renzong of Song fell ill, and medicinal treatments were ineffective. Occasionally, folk doctors were summoned. Acupuncture was employed, inserting needles from the back of the head. As soon as the needles were withdrawn, (the Emperor) opened his eyes and said: "My mind is clear." The next day, His Majesty's health had fully recovered.
From then on, this acupoint was called "Xingxing Point" (Point of Clarity), although it had no such name in the classic meridians texts; some say it is precisely Fengfu (GV16). (From Zhang Shunmin's *Shu Man Lian* of the Song Dynasty.)
Wu Qiao treated the wife of Fang Jian, who had been ill for five years. She could not finish a single vessel of food in one meal. At night, her head felt heavy and dizzy, alternating between fainting and waking, only stabilizing at dawn. Upon arrival, Wu Qiao said: "With little food intake and prolonged bed rest, the muscles should be emaciated, yet now they are plump, and the pulse is not rapid. What is the disease? Perhaps the woman is pregnant, causing significant blood deficiency in the head. If so, after two years of treatment, she may conceive, give birth to a son, and recover." It turned out that the woman had once wept bitterly over her mother-in-law's death, developing bean-sized warts at the hair roots that bled several sheng, which she concealed. She later suffered a miscarriage and became infertile. Wu Qiao did not tonify Qi but focused solely on nourishing Blood. After two years, she gave birth to a son, named "Qu Bing" (Removing Disease), and her condition returned to normal. (From *Tai Han Ji*.)
Li Linfu's son-in-law, Zheng Ping, served as a Provincial Official. Li Linfu noticed his hair turning gray and white, and remarked: "The Emperor will bestow Sweet Dew Soup tomorrow; if you eat it, your hair will turn black." The next day, after eating it, his hair turned black twice overnight. (From *Langya Dai Zui Bian*.)
Li Qing's formula for reversing white hair states: Scrape one large sheng of fresh old ginger skin. Simmer it in a pot using moderate to strong heat, ensuring it does not boil excessively. The pot should ideally be one that retains grease; there is no need to wash or scrape it clean. Place the ginger skin directly into the pot, seal it tightly to prevent vapor leakage. Assign a meticulous person to guard it. Begin simmering before dawn (when the sky is not yet bright). Proceed slowly, avoiding urgent fire. If the person becomes slightly fatigued, replace them. After one shichen (two hours), transfer the mixture into a porcelain mortar and grind it into an extremely fine powder. Although Li's formula specifies one shichen, if the heat control is insufficient, the medicine can be ready by sunset. To use, dip the end of a hairpin into the powder, taking an amount the size of a hemp seed. Apply it under the white hairs first, then pluck them. Re-apply with a finger, warming and rubbing gently to penetrate the skin. By the fourth day, black hairs should grow; this is remarkably effective.
Master Mei treats young people with white hair by plucking the white hairs and applying white honey into the pores, which induces black hair growth. If it does not grow, apply juice extracted from tung nuts; black hair will surely grow.
*Qianjin Fang* treats yellowish hair by applying bear fat to the hair and combing it. Spread the hair out, crawl under the bed, and lie prone on the ground for about the time it takes to eat one meal. Upon emerging, the hair will be completely black; less than one sheng of bear fat is sufficient for verification.
Xue Lizhai treated a man whose eyebrows and hair suddenly fell out due to anger-induced fever. Since hair belongs to the Kidney and eyebrows belong to the Liver, this was caused by inherent weakness of the Liver and Kidneys, exacerbated by anger, leading to intensified Yin Fire that consumed Essence and Blood. He used Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) base added with Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), and Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark). After several doses, hair began to grow gradually; after more than twenty doses, it fully recovered.
A man contracted a seasonal pestilence and took medicines like Huanji San (Skin-Rejuvenating Powder). His eyebrows suddenly fell out, his whole body itched, and red halos appeared intermittently. This was due to drying herbs damaging Yin Blood, causing Yang Qi to become hyperactive. In the morning, he took Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with doubled Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), plus Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root). In the evening, he took Liuwei Wan base added with Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) and Huang Qi (Astragalus Root). Once the sores healed, his eyebrows grew back.
A man who neglected sexual restraint suddenly lost his hair. He experienced intermittent fever and aversion to cold, phlegm expectoration and dizziness, dry mouth and thirst, urinary symptoms resembling strangury, hot feet, or coldness extending to the calves. This belonged to deficiency of the Three Yin Meridians of the Foot with internal blazing Yin Fire. In the morning, he took Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction); in the evening, Liuwei Wan base added with stir-fried black Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) and Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry). All symptoms subsided, and hair gradually regrew.
A man suffered generalized itching. After taking wind-dispelling acrid-drying agents, his eyebrows and hair fell out. This was caused by previous medications further injuring the Liver and Kidneys, resulting in Essence-Blood deficiency and internal blazing fire. In the morning, he took Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) added with Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry); in the evening, Liuwei Wan base added with Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) and Huang Qi (Astragalus Root). The wind-heat receded, and eyebrows and hair grew.
A scholar suffered generalized itching with ruptured pustules oozing pus and blood, and eyebrow loss, resembling leprosy. Long-term use of wind-dispelling drugs led to Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) deficiency. He was cured using Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Warmer Boosting Qi-Decoction) added with Fu Ling (Poria). Later, lacking proper regulation, he suffered severe afternoon tidal fever. He was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) added with Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), recovering after more than fifty doses.
