...harm. Wang Sheng had previously panicked himself, allowing his family to seek other physicians through various connections. Only a small amount of Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) was used, after which the previous critical symptoms reappeared; his face showed an aura of death, with the only difference being that he did not have diarrhea. He was given Spleen-regulating medicines again and did not regain consciousness until five days later.
Yang Chengliu treated the son of the Sun family for Manpi Feng (Slow Spleen Wind), characterized by surging phlegm and saliva, cough with fever, convulsions with spontaneous sweating, lethargy with eyes half-open showing the whites, grasping at empty air, and hand tremors. Multiple administrations of formulas for tonifying the Spleen, expelling wind, and resolving phlegm were ineffective. Yang said: "In this condition, the wind arises from within, so there is no wind to expel; the phlegm moves due to deficiency, so it need not be eliminated. One should merely tonify the Earth of the Spleen, and all symptoms will recede naturally. Now, the patient has a pale complexion, scattered pupils, a slippery white tongue coating, and collapse of the Tianzhu (neck support); this is deficiency compounded with cold. Without Paojiang (Prepared Ginger), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), how can one retrieve the dispersed Yang Qi and revive the near-extinct vital energy?" Therefore, he prescribed Shenfu Yangrong Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Nourishing Formulation) and instructed: "If one assumes that young children possess pure Yang constitution and thus forbids tonifying Yang, recovery will be impossible." After one dose, symptoms decreased; after three doses, they completely disappeared. Subsequently, Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Powder for Supporting the Spleen) was used, with added Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger) and Baishao (White Peony Root), leading to recovery.
Xue Lizhai stated: A child frequently suffered from food stagnation. Repeated use of purgative and digestive-promoting agents led to extreme Spleen and Stomach deficiency, resulting in death from Tu Xie Manpi Feng (Vomiting and Diarrhea Slow Spleen Wind).
Wan Mizhai treated a child whose Spleen and Stomach were inherently weak. He contracted diarrhea and was given Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), but the diarrhea persisted. Sores appeared in the mouth. Some suggested that the previous medicine's heat nature aggravated fire, so cold-natured medicines were administered instead. The child had a slight fever and slept with eyes upward-turned. Wan said: "This is Manpi Feng. The Spleen and Stomach are originally deficient; diarrhea further depletes them. The oral sores are due to deficient heat in the Spleen. Misusing cold medicines damages the Middle Qi further. Lethargy and refusal to nurse indicate extreme deficiency. One must urgently prepare Tiaoyuan Tang (Regulate Origin Decoction) with doubled Renshen (Ginseng Root) dosage. After half a month of regulation, he recovered."
Ma Mingju treated the son of Hua Shuchan, who suffered from Manpi Feng and recovered in five or six days. Just three or four days after recovery, he overate and bathed for two consecutive nights. This caused recurrent phlegm obstruction and coma, facial and ocular edema, chest swelling and fullness, vomiting, inability to take milk or food, opisthotonos (body arching backward like a bow), and constipation of both stool and urine. Someone proposed using Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill). Ma said: "Swallowing it would cause death. This is a post-illness deficiency pattern; even Ginseng should not be used. Use Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 3 qian, Pipa Ye (Loquat Leaf) 3 leaves, Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb) 2.5 qian, Sangbai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark) 1.5 qian, Xingren (Apricot Seed) 1 qian, Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb) 1 qian, Xian Tangqiu (Fresh Sugar Ball/Fruit) 1 piece, Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) fried in human milk 0.8 fen, Juhong (Tangerine Red Peel) 1.2 qian. Decoct with Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Core). Add Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) before administration. After passing the time limit for the dose, urination became smooth, the abdomen relaxed immediately, and all symptoms subsided. Completion of the prescription resulted in full recovery."
Wang Yuanjin's son, aged five, developed malaria due to food injury. Convulsions occurred after the malaria, indicating a Spleen deficiency disease. Wan said: "Generally, treating Jing Feng (Wind of Alarm/Convulsion) requires Xieqing Wan (Drain Green Pill) and Daochi San (Direct to the Heart Powder); even skilled craftsmen cannot abandon these standards. However, this case must not be treated with purgation. It is suitable to use Tiaoyuan Tang (Regulate Origin Decoction) and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill). Following this, the convulsions stopped, but the eyes could not open, and the child was drowsy and preferred sleep, indicating extreme Spleen deficiency. The Spleen governs lassitude, hence the preference for sleep. The upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen; Spleen deficiency causes inability to open the eyes. Continue using Tiaoyuan Tang to tonify the deficiency and Hupo Baolong Wan to calm the Spirit. Since the Spleen delights in joy, order those who usually play with the child to gather around the bed, strike drums and cymbals, sing, or dance to engage him. (This method is also excellent.) The sick child's eyes opened and closed intermittently, gradually regaining consciousness and losing the desire to sleep."
