Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman whose malaria had persisted for a long time without resolution, accompanied by belching, excessive flatulence, distension of the chest and abdomen, poor appetite with nausea, hematochezia (blood in stool), and severe insomnia. This was diagnosed as Liver-Spleen Qi stagnation due to depression and anger. He prescribed Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) added with Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), leading to gradual improvement. Subsequently, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chai Hu, Shan Zhi, and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) was used, resulting in complete recovery.
Another pregnant woman had recovered from malaria but still experienced chills and fever, poor appetite, headache, and afternoon/evening internal heat. This was identified as Spleen deficiency and Blood weakness. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Man Jing Zi (Vittateni Fructus) stopped the headache immediately. Then, Liu Jun Zi Tang added with Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Gui Dang (Danggui Radix Sinensis) improved her appetite significantly. Finally, Xiao Yao San (Free Wanderer Powder) added with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) cured the chills and fever.
Chen Liangfu treated a pregnant woman at six or seven months gestation who contracted malaria, presenting with initial chills followed by fever and floating-tight pulses in all six positions. Other physicians failed to cure her using Chai Hu and Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). Chen stated that this condition could not be cured without Chang Shan (Daphnes Genkwa Bark). The other doctors refused, causing a delay of several days until the condition worsened severely. Reluctantly, they agreed to his advice, and one dose of Qi Bao San (Seven Treasures Powder) resulted in a cure. (From *Liang Fang*.)
Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman at three months gestation who developed malaria after eating and becoming angry, vomiting three times consecutively. He prescribed Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi) for two doses, followed by one dose of An Tai Yin (Fetus-Calming Decoction), leading to recovery. Later, due to anger, she suffered from excessive phlegm, delirium, fever, and chest distension, which felt slightly better upon pressure. This was diagnosed as Liver-Spleen Qi stagnation. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder) added with Chuan Xiong was administered; symptoms receded rapidly after two doses and stabilized after four doses.

He prescribed Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 4 qian, Chai Hu 3 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 2 qian, and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian. These were decocted with one bowl of well water and one bowl of river water until reduced to one bowl. The mixture was exposed overnight and taken in one dose the next morning after being warmed in a water bath, resulting in a cure. If ineffective, add Sheng Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Preparatus Radix) 5 qian; if night sweats are severe, add Hei Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum) 3 qian; if appetite is excessive, add Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) 2 qian. This formula is suitable for cases with predominant heat.
In another case of a pregnant woman with malaria, the right pulse was slightly slippery and the left pulse was slightly wiry. Jiang stated: "This is phlegm generated due to Spleen deficiency." He prescribed Bai Zhu 5 qian and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 qian, decocted with well and river water, exposed overnight, and taken warm, resulting in a cure. This formula is suitable for cases with predominant cold.
