Sun Zhao treated the National Grandmother for cold tears flowing from the eyes. Ophthalmologists had treated her for two or three years without effect. The Emperor summoned Sun Zhao, who arrived and said, "I am not an ophthalmologist, but I have medicine. Please allow me to submit a prescription." He used *Shi Jue Ming* (Haliotidis Concha) one liang, *Chi Xiao Dou* (Vigna umbellata Seed) half a liang, *Ban Xia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma) five qian, raw *Ban Mao* (Mylabris) twenty-one grains (stir-fried, heads and feet removed), and *Mu Zei* (Equiseti Herba) five qian. These were ground into powder and made into pills the size of paulownia seeds using ginger juice. Each dose was twenty pills, taken with ginger soup. After the prescription was submitted, an imperial edict ordered the ophthalmologists to review it in detail. They memorialized, "This prescription has nothing to do with ophthalmology. Ban Mao is toxic and may damage the zang-fu organs. We dare not use it, and request another imperial edict." Upon hearing this, the National Grandmother said, "The ophthalmologists are not only unable to cure me, but they also do not wish for me to be treated. As long as this medicine is prepared, even if it causes injury, I will bear no resentment." The Emperor heard this, and Sun Zhao administered the medicine himself. After more than ten days of taking it, she improved by eight-tenths; after twenty days, she was completely cured. At that time, the ophthalmologists were demoted, and Sun Zhao was rewarded with 300,000 cash. (Xiong Yingxiong's note: Although the ophthalmologists were demoted, their words were not entirely wrong. Although the Grandmother's eyes were cured, this prescription should not serve as a model. Students should not blindly trust books.)
Dou Cai treated a female servant in his household who suddenly lost vision in both eyes, yet examination revealed no opacity. Thinking carefully, this young woman had not yet declined in essence and qi. How could she suffer from this condition? It was likely due to her impatient and irritable nature injuring the Liver, causing disharmony of the meridians. He prescribed *Mi Meng Hua San* (Buddleja Powder) for one dose, and her vision returned to its former brightness.
Zhang Zihe treated a female attendant who suddenly went blind. This was due to flourishing ministerial fire. Since the Taiyang and Yangming channels had abundant blood and qi, he punctured the Yingxiang point in the nose, the Cuanzhu points, and five points on the top of the head, releasing a large amount of blood. Her vision immediately cleared.
Li Minfan's eyes were often red. In the year Wuzi, when Fire was the governing climate and Jun Huo presided over the sky, those suffering from eye diseases often experienced sudden blindness due to the severe Fire disaster. Li's condition flared up severely that year. Zhang Zihe used Gou Ti San (Melon Stalk Powder) to induce vomiting, and the redness subsided immediately. However, it flared up again shortly after. The onset involved redness starting from the inner canthus of the left eye, pulling the eyeball outward like spread hemp, then spreading to the outer canthi bilaterally, and finally crossing the pupil. Another round of vomiting reduced the symptoms. This happened five times, requiring five rounds of vomiting, plus bleeding from the hands, head, and nose. Only after draining the pathogenic factors from above, below, inside, and outside could the disease be defeated. He advised avoiding reading and sunlight. Zhang Zihe stated, "We must wait for the cool autumn weather to attack the disease further. Currently, the Fire is vigorous and located in the skin; attacking the interior is useless. In autumn, heat gradually moves inward, allowing us to capture it. One should rest in the dark with eyes closed to nourish the Spirit Water. Darkness and stillness belong to Water; brightness and movement belong to Fire, hence sunlight should be avoided." Li's recurrence was due to going out in the summer heat after initial recovery. After vomiting and purging, frequent attacks should be avoided; instead, he should take Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) to reduce opacities. The prescription is in another collection.
Zhao Junyu suffered from sudden red and swollen eyes that did not respond to drops and washes. Recalling Zhang Zihe's words, "Diseases in the upper part of the body should generally be treated with emesis," he used Cha Tiao San (Tea Regulation Powder) to induce vomiting. After one session, the redness and swelling dissipated. Zhao sighed, "The efficacy of this method is so rapid! I realize now that methods are not distant from people; people distance themselves from methods."
Wang Zhiyi's son, aged over ten, had red eyes with excessive tearing, and various doctors failed. Zhang Zihe said, "This child's eye disease stems from fright received in the womb." His father replied, "During pregnancy, we were besieged in Linqing." Zhang prescribed Gou Ti San with Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix). The patient vomited and purged several sheng of phlegm-saliva. People mocked him, and his mother asked, "Why induce such vomiting and purging if there is no illness in the belly?" The next day, his eyes became bright and clear. That day, he also bled from the head, eyebrows, and nose. He took Tong Jing San (Meridian-Opening Powder) twice and Zhou Che Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) seventy pills, vomiting slightly less than half. He then took one qian of Tong Jing San, followed by thirty Zhou Che Wan pills the next day, resulting in eighteen bowel movements. The disease did not recur.
Scholar Zhao Zhongwen, preparing for exams, suffered from red, swollen eyes with opacities, unable to see the path, experiencing severe pain and contemplating suicide. While resting with companions in a teahouse, a window hook fell, striking his forehead, splitting the hairline by three or four cun, and causing several sheng of purple blood to flow. Once the bleeding stopped, his eyes felt comfortable, and he could find his way home. The next day, he could distinguish roof ridges and tile grooves. Within a few days, he recovered. This was a case of accidental healing through bleeding, without medicine or acupuncture. Bleeding is a form of sweating and coincidentally aligns with bleeding therapy.
A child named Desun had red eyes. His mother bought copper green to wash his eyes, boiled it, but family members mistakenly gave it to him to drink. He vomited profusely, and upon finishing, his eyes opened immediately.
Lou Quanshan's son suffered from eye pain at night radiating to the supraorbital ridge and half of the head, which was swollen and painful. Using Huang Lian Gao (Coptis Ointment) worsened the condition, and other medicines failed. Moxibustion on the Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians stopped the pain temporarily, but it returned after half a day. Over a month later, he took Xia Ku Cao (Prunellae Spica) two liang, Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) two liang, and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) four qian, ground into powder. Each dose was one and a half qian, taken with clear tea. Throat pain halved, and after four to five doses, he was well.
A man suffered similarly but had two white opacities on the cornea. Other medicines failed. He used the same prescription combined with Dong Yuan's Xuan Qi Tang added with Si Wu Tang and Huang Lian, taken alternately, along with moxibustion on the Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians, and recovered.
Wang Haicang's wife's niece was obese. She developed eye disease at puberty, recurring every month or two months. Attacks involved severe redness and swelling making eyes hard to open. This lasted three years. Taking wind-dispersing and heat-clearing agents caused stubborn opacities in the left eye, spreading from the inner canthus to cover the pupil, and in the right eye, spreading upward. The Classic states: "Spreading from inside to outside indicates Shaoyang disease; spreading from bottom to top indicates Yangming disease." This indicated stagnation in the Shaoyang and Yangming channels. The pulse was short, slippery, and forceful, returning to a short and choppy quality. Jiegu said, "A short pulse indicates stagnation suppressing the zang-fu; purgation is appropriate." He used Wen Bai Wan, removing Chuan Xiong and Fu Zi, adding Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), following Dong Yuan's Five Accumulations method. Starting with two pills, increasing by one daily until significant purgation occurred, then decreasing back to two. Suddenly, black blood clods like beans were passed. Gradually, he recovered, and opacities disappeared. (These three cases are from *Yi Xue Gang Mu*.)
Peng Daban, Recorder of Luzhou, in Lin'an, suddenly developed red eyes with opacities. A monk used Lan Xiang Zi (Ocimum Basilicum Seed), washed and dried, inserting one grain into the eye, closing it briefly, causing the membrane to exit. Another method was grinding into powder for instillation. Li Shizhen tested the seed in water, where it swelled. Since it swells upon contact with moisture, it attracts discharge and floating membranes. However, dust must be excluded. Inserting three to five grains is harmless, which is unusual. (*Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
Zhang Dafu said: "When my vision first blurred, someone advised San Hua Wu Zi Wan (Three Flowers and Five Seeds Pill). Others said it acts too slowly. Is it useful? So I stopped. Zhang Douyue of Yangzhou told me: 'A monk from Huai suffered long-term blindness, claiming to have taken San Hua Wu Zi Wan.' This is recorded in ancient texts, but preparation methods vary, affecting efficacy. Upon my return, please give me the formula. I am old and ill, needing no treatment myself, but wish to help others with similar conditions. Zhang Xinshi knows swordsmanship; his words are reliable." (*Bi Tan*)
Zhang Sanfeng's True Person's Bi Yun Gao for eye disease: In December, take over ten gallbladders from male sheep, fill with honey, cover with paper, hang under eaves. When frost forms, sweep it down for instillation. Miraculous effect. (Also known as Er Bai Wei Cao Hua Gao, a different preparation.)
Scholar Zhu of Yanzhou suddenly lost vision. He prayed morning and evening, dreaming of a deity transmitting a formula: Use one liang of Yan Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), melt in a copper vessel, add two fen of Fei Guo Huang Dan (Calcined Minium) and two fen of Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum). Stir quickly with a copper spoon and store in a jar. Instill a small amount for immediate cure. (Zhang Sanfeng's Immortal Formula.)
Prime Minister Song said: Official Huang suffered from external opacities. Dreaming of a deity, he received a formula: Use Tai Yin Xuan Jing Shi (Selenitum), Yin Yang Huo (Epimedii Folium processed with stone?), Shi Jue Ming each one liang, Rui Ren (Buckwheat Seed) and Huang Lian each two liang, seven lamb livers. Cut with a bamboo knife and dry. Grind into powder, make pills the size of paulownia seeds with millet rice. Take twenty pills with tea before bed. After seven days, cauterize the vertex to assist the medicine. Cured in one month. (*Zhu Shi Ji Yan Fang*)
Wei Quan's wealthy family: The mother suddenly went blind. Wang Zizhen divined, "On March 1st next year, a person coming from the east wearing blue will cure her." At the appointed time, a man in a blue silk jacket appeared. They invited him and provided food. He said, "I do not know medicine, but I know how to make plow ears." Seeking a plow shaft, he saw a curved mulberry branch over a well, cut it down, and the mother's eyes instantly regained sight. This was caused by the mulberry branch covering the well. (*Chao Ye Qian Zai*)
Wang Xi's essential poem says: "After red eyes, opacities suddenly appear; E Bu Shi Cao (Centipeda minima) is the name. Pack frequently into the nose; within three days, clarity returns." Ni Weide's *Yuan Ji Qi Wei* uses E Bu Shi Cao (dried two qian), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) each one qian, ground fine. Hold a mouthful of water, insert a grain-sized amount into the nose until tears flow. Another version removes Qing Dai. (*Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
*Jing Yan Fang* treats eye obstructions with a little Bear Bile (Xiong Dan), mixed with clean water, removing membranes and dust. Add one or two pieces of Bing Pian (Borneolum). If tearing/itching occurs, add a little Ginger Juice. Apply with a copper probe; miraculous for red eyes. My two old maids found this effective. Bear bile repels dust: test by placing dust on a clean vessel; dropping a piece of bile clears the dust instantly. (Same source.)
Zhu Danxi treated fly hairs in the eye, causing redness, swelling, pain, inability to open, and clear nasal discharge. He used Mo Nong (Ink Pus) ground and applied with a new brush. Closing the eyes briefly, then opening them, the hair formed a lump on the sclera, which was gently wiped away with cotton. Repeat if necessary. For fly hairs, applying Tou Gou (Capillus Humanus) directly into the eye expels them miraculously. Also for foreign bodies. Yanliang recorded this; over seventy years without eye disease. (*Yan Shu*)
An octogenarian had clear vision, reading small print at night, attributing it to never eating animal livers since childhood. People doubted this based on the classic saying "Sheep liver brightens eyes." I said, "Sheep liver brightens eyes because sheep eat herbs. Other animals differ. At slaughter, anger accumulates in the liver. Since the Liver governs blood, it is unsuitable for brightening eyes." (*Yan Shu*)
Chen Po's second daughter developed internal cataracts after smallpox toxins attacked upward. Various medicines failed for half a month. An old doctor provided a formula: One snake molt, washed and dried. Equal parts Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix). Grind fine. Split a lamb liver, insert medicine, tie with hemp, boil in rice water, and eat sliced. Cured in over ten days. Later, her nephew used this successfully. (*Cha An Xiao Cheng*)
Wan Mizhai treated Governor Sun of Huaihai for eye disease, caused by excessive reading during official duties. Reading documents caused eye pain and distension. He used Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) as the base: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix wine-washed), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba wine-fried), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix wine-fried). Removed Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) due to dryness, and Chuan Xiong due to dispersing properties. Added Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), and reduced Huang Lian by half. Total eleven ingredients. Sun asked, "Why not Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) or Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Fructus)?" I replied, "Eye diseases have external and internal causes. Wind-heat is external, requiring dispersion ('Fire depression requires dispersion'). Prolonged viewing damaging blood is internal, requiring blood nourishment ('The eyes see when nourished by blood')." After dozens of doses, he fully recovered.
Sun Wen Yuan treated brothers Wu Xiaofeng and Wu Xiaochuan for eye disease. Specialist treatment worsened it: redness/swelling, temporal pain, then white star-like opacities. Pulse: Xiaofeng was soggy, slow, and large; blood vessels penetrated pupils; pain worse at dusk. (Deficiency.) Xiaochuan had surging, forceful pulse; floating opacity on cornea, difficult to open; constipation/urinary difficulty. (Excess.) Thus, Xiaofeng received tonification, starting with Qing Gan San (Clear Liver Powder): Xia Ku Cao five qian, Xiang Fu four qian, Gan Cao one and a half qian, Fine Tea five fen, to relieve pain (treating symptoms). Pain stopped after two doses. Then used Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex). (For root cause, Gui, Tu Si, and Ji Li should be used cautiously.) Xiaochuan received purgation: Nei Yong Xie Gan Tang (Liver-Purging Decoction) and Dang Gui Long Hui Wan (Angelica and Aloe Pill) internally; Ivory and Borneol powder externally (must be extremely fine). Cured in seven days. The Classic states: "Excess is treated directly; deficiency is treated indirectly." Xiaochuan had Jueyin Liver Fire blazing (Liver excess); purging is direct treatment. Xiaofeng had lower deficiency aggravated by anger (Fire rising from Liver, blood vessels penetrating pupils, dusk pain). First, Qing Gan San relieved pain; then, sweet-warm tonics replenished lower Yuan, guiding Fire back to its source. This is indirect treatment. Using bitter-cold fire-reducers might congeal blood and worsen pain, intensifying Fire.
Nephew's grandson had red, swollen eyes. Given bitter-cold medicines for epidemic fevers, swelling worsened, plus temporal pain. Adding Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) did not reduce disease, causing full-body bloating and loss of sleep/appetite. Pulse: string-taut, large, but powerless. Used Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Fructus), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Xiang Fu, Xia Ku Cao, Gan Cao, Ya Cha (Sprouted Tea). One dose settled pain, two doses reduced swelling, four doses cured.
A girl had right eye redness/swelling; could open only when abdomen was full, not when hungry. This was malnutrition accumulation with cold. Used Xia Ku Cao two qian, Gan Cao and Gu Jing Mi (Evodiae Fructus? Note: Text says Gu Jing, likely Gu Jing Cao or similar) each one qian, Xiang Fu one and a half qian. Decocted and taken. Four doses brought peace.
Madam Sun, over forty, had red/swollen eyes, temporal pain, constipation for three days, menstruation continuing for four days. Treatments failed. A white blister suddenly appeared in the inner canthus of the right eye, hanging level with the nose, over two cun wide. Specialists fled, calling it a strange disease. She was dizzy, unable to move; movement worsened vomiting. Pulse: Cun and Guan slippery/large/forceful; Chi deep/faint. Phlegm in Middle Jiao, Fire in Liver/Gallbladder, triggered by anger. Classic: "All wind/tremors/dizziness belong to Liver; all rebellious upward rushing belongs to Fire." No phlegm, no dizziness. (Though debatable.) The blister resulted from rapid Fire nature + anger, Qi rushing to collaterals upward. Ancient strong men burst eyes from anger; same principle. Treatment: Suppress Liver Wood, settle Phlegm-Fire. First, Jiang Zhi Yi Yuan Wan (Ginger Juice Yi Yuan Pill) to suppress Fire and stop vomiting. Then, Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Jiu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma wine-treated), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix wine-treated), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Hua Shi (Talcum), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). One dose stopped vomiting, slight movement possible. Continued Er Chen Tang with Qin, Lian, Ju Hua, Gu Jing Cao, Xia Ku Cao, Xiang Fu, Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Wu Zhu Yu. Four doses reduced redness/swelling, retracted blister, stopped menstruation, cured. Yu Dongfu commented: "Symptoms strange, treatment stable. Medicine requires understanding principles, not novelty."
Lv Dongzhuang treated Wu Qi's brother with left eye pain radiating to brain. Headwind treatments failed. Initially chills/fever, then high fever unceasing. Lv diagnosed: "Fire hidden inside, Wind-Dryness drying springs, Wood breaking. Must sweat to resolve." Someone asked: "Sweating requires exterior-releasing drugs, isn't Wind-Dryness relevant? Sweating drugs require bundling in blankets. Fever makes this unbearable. What to do?" (Rare, profound.) Lv said: "Quack doctors force sweat, requiring blankets, yet fail. I expose their tricks. My drug is not like this. With thin quilts and relaxed body, rain comes naturally; how can it be blocked?" (Language not perfectly fluid.) Used Long Nao Bai Zhu Yin Zi (Brain Camphor Atractylodes Drink). (Must be Xiao Yao [Free Wanderer].) Midnight, heavy sweating. Next day, head/eyes refreshed. (Long Nao Bai Zhu Yin Zi cannot be verified. Some say Zhao's Modified Xiao Yao San, unknown. Original note. Xiong's note: Discussion superb, but formula is still wind-dispersing, seemingly inconsistent with 'spring dryness'.)
Wu Fuxian treated a man with eye pain. Pierced Yingxiang point in nose with bamboo leaf, bleeding cured him. Yingxiang is intersection of Hand/Foot Yangming. (Method from Zhang Zihe.)
Wang Zongcang had red eyes, palpitations, borborygmus, dull complexion, empty Left hand pulse, weak Right Guan/Chi pulses. Wu said: "Liver/Kidney mutual deficiency, unable to control wandering Fire. Not Lung Excess Fire." Morning: Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction); Evening: Ba Wei Wan (Eight Ingredient Pill). Within a month, redness faded, pulse harmonized.
Yang Benheng treated a nobleman with internal cataracts. Irritable, constantly checking mirror, demanding quick results. Several doctors failed. Yang diagnosed: "Your eye disease will heal itself. But you took too much medicine; poison flowed to left thigh. Abscess will break soon. I worry for you." After leaving, the nobleman watched/massaged his thigh, fearing the abscess. Eventually, eyes healed, abscess didn't break. Nobleman accused Yang of lying. Yang replied: "Medicine is intention. You are impatient, obsessed with eyes. Fire rises, eyes won't heal. I lied to focus your mind on feet, lowering Fire, healing eyes." (Xiong's note: This is 'Emotion Transfer' miracle method. If doctors generalize, it beats Xiao Yao/Yue Qu formulas.) Military strategy applies to medicine. Nobleman praised him as a good doctor and sent him off richly. (*Jun Zhai Man Lu*, *Jiangxi Tong Zhi*)
Fan Wuzi had eye pain, sought prescription from Zhang Chudu. Zhang mocked: "Ancient master Song Yang Lizishao taught Lu Dongmen Bo, who taught Zuo Qiuming, Han Du Zixia, Zheng Kangcheng, Wei Gaotang Long, Jin Zuo Taichong. All these sages had eye diseases. The transmitted formula says: 1. Reduce thinking; 2. Focus inward gaze; 3. Simplify external observation; 4. Rise late morning/evening; 5. Sleep early night. Cook with Divine Fire, descend to Qi Hai, accumulate in chest, enter Fang Cun (Heart/Mind). Practice for a while, count eyelashes nearby, see ruler-length afar. Long-term use, see through walls. Not just brightening eyes, but prolonging life." (Same source.)
Huang Lvsu said: "In youth, lacking Shen/Qi, I had eye issues. Overuse caused soreness/blurriness for days. Studied texts; many said Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) cures eyes. Took two or three doses, worsened. Changed to other Kidney-tonifying/Blood-Qi herbs, slightly improved. Later read *Yi Xue Gou Yuan*'s differentiation against Liu Wei Di Huang Wan for eye disease, stating Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) and Fu Ling leach water, Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) unsuitable for eyes. (Shan Zhu Yu is sour; Liver opens to eyes. Classic: Liver disease, avoid sour. All Liver/Kidney diseases avoid these three ingredients...)"
