(Chi Dan, also known as Feng Dan, Chi You Feng, or Chi Liu.)
Sun Simiao said: In the third month of the seventh year of Zhenguan, I drank too much wine in Neijiang County. By night, I felt pain in the bones and muscles of my four limbs. By dawn, I had a headache, and on my forehead and temples appeared red patches like bullet-sized balls, swollen and painful.
By noon, the swelling spread throughout my body, and I could not open my eyes. After one day, I was nearly dead. I recalled that *Bensao* records that Youcai (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis) treats wind-wandering Dan swelling. So I took the leaves, crushed them, and applied them to the affected area; they subsided immediately, with miraculous efficacy. It can also be taken as juice. (Another version says if there are no leaves, use seeds ground into powder instead.)
Zhang Zihe treated a child of the Huang family whose face was red and swollen, unable to open both eyes. He used needle pricking, lightly bloodletting. Except for the outer corners of the eyes, he randomly pricked dozens of times until blood flowed, after which he recovered. Many people are unwilling to follow this method, but if one wishes to cure the disease, one must not be overly cautious.
Zhu Danxi treated a middle-aged man who, after an abscess ulcerated, suffered from fever and dry retching, with Dan toxic heat appearing on his back. Various topical applications for Dan were ineffective. Then, using a knife to bleed each head of the Dan, it still did not recede. Later, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and tonifying agents were used to treat the vomiting, but without effect. Finally, pure Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) half liang, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 1 qian 5 fen, were decocted strongly. After one dose, the vomiting stopped. After two or three doses, the Dan gradually eased, and the heat gradually decreased. After about fifty-plus doses, the heat was finally eliminated, and the spirit/qi recovered.
Bao Yunzhong, aged fifty, suffered from severe itching due to Wind Dan, slight abdominal pain, throat discomfort, and slight swelling of the face and eyes, lasting five to six days without improvement. The pulse at both cun positions was slippery, large, and excess; the right pulse was floating and large; the left pulse was floating, wiry, and small. He prescribed Chao Qin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried), Chao Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma stir-fried), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Ziwei (Bignoniae Caulis) each 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix) each 5 fen. After five or six doses, he was at peace.
Huang Shiwen treated a woman suffering from Wind Dan, which would recur and worsen every time wine touched her lips, causing bone-piercing itching, almost leading to death. He ordered her to take Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). After several doses, she tested it with a cup of wine as instructed; after drinking, the Dan did not appear. A maid of Dezhao also suffered from Wind Dan and heard this report; she took Wuji San and her illness also resolved. Furthermore, Huang Shiwen used Wuji San to treat postpartum diarrhea with remarkable results. (From "Beichuang Zhi Gai Lun".)
Xue Lizhai treated a woman who lived ascetically and suffered from wandering wind due to depression and anger. She had afternoon fever, internal heat, spontaneous sweating, nocturnal sweating, amenorrhea, dry mouth, and dry throat. This was depression damaging the spleen. He prescribed Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) for several doses, after which symptoms slightly receded. Later, Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) was added, and she recovered after fifty-plus doses.
Another woman suffered from this condition, with an irritable temperament, alternating chills and fever, bitter taste in the mouth, hypochondriac pain, tinnitus, abdominal distension, and dysuria. This was liver and spleen blood deficiency with hyperactive fire. He used Liujun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Longdancao (Gentianae Radix). After several doses, it was combined with Xiaoyao San, leading to gradual recovery. Later, Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) and Xiaoyao San were given for over seventy doses, after which all symptoms disappeared.
Another woman suffered from the previous condition and mistakenly took medicine for leprosy, resulting in broken skin oozing fluid, irritability, thirst, and dizziness. Although it resembled wind syndrome, the six pulses were flooding and rapid, especially affecting the heart and spleen. He stated: "Wind arises from fire." This was caused by angry fire, pathogenic invasion of the spleen and stomach, and dryness of blood, not true wind syndrome. He prescribed Xiaoyao San and Liuwei Wan to clear liver fire, nourish spleen blood, and generate kidney water, leading to recovery.
Another woman suffered from the previous condition for a long time without recovery, with poor appetite and fatigue. This was liver and spleen deficiency with yin deficiency generating heat. First, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Chao Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus stir-fried) was used, gradually restoring yuan qi. Then, Xiaoyao San was used, and the sores gradually healed.
Another woman suffered from Chi You Feng (Red Wandering Wind). Her afternoon fever and severe itching were treated with formulas to clear the liver and nourish blood. Disbelieving this, she took leprosy medicine, resulting in arm pain and tendon contraction. She then took phlegm-resolving and qi-smoothing agents, leading to flaccidity of the four limbs. Another woman suffered from the previous condition and repeatedly washed with decoctions of wind-dispelling herbs, resulting in abdominal distension and death.
A fifteen-year-old girl suffered from Luoli (scrofula) with red halos, presenting with physical exhaustion and qi deficiency. This was caused by liver fire and blood deficiency. Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) cured the red halos, and Yiqi Tang (Qi-Tonifying Decoction) combined with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) eliminated the scrofula.
Another woman presented with body resembling Dan Du (erysipelas), with pus and fluid oozing from scratched areas, heat, thirst, and dizziness, worsening in the late afternoon. Jiawei Xiaoyao San cured her.
