Whenever a pregnant woman suffers from deficiency in the Chong and Ren meridians, with weak and emaciated Qi and Blood, this is due to insufficient congenital endowment. Once conception occurs, Qi and Blood are divided to nourish the fetus, causing various deficiency syndromes to naturally emerge. Some may miscarry immediately after conception, while others may experience poor fetal development; thus, medicinal force must be utilized to assist the mother in stabilizing the fetus and ensuring the longevity of the offspring. Therefore, those with weak constitutions who have given birth repeatedly often produce children lacking vitality, or whose children do not live long, all due to insufficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi) of the parents. If a young man marries a robust woman and cherishes his essence like a treasure, calculating until the menstrual blood has completely ceased, and choosing single months in even years, or even months in odd years—specifically on the first, third, fifth, or seventh days after menstruation ends—to engage in intercourse during times when Yang Qi is abundant, then a male child can be conceived in one attempt. Even if the woman is in an even month/even year or odd month/odd year, provided her period starts and ends on single days, engaging in intercourse on the first through seventh single days will also result in a male pregnancy. This explains why common vulgar calculations are often inaccurate; it lies in these principles of Yin and Yang. If both Essence and nourishment are sufficient, and the inherited constitution is rich, with a full body and strong bones, what illness could there be? Why would medication be needed? Naturally, the born child will have abundant Shen (Spirit), be free from disease, and enjoy longevity. However, if conception results from strong Yang and weak Yin, the mother will lack surplus Blood to nourish the fetus, necessitating medicinal supplementation to generate Blood and cultivate the body, so that the child may be born with strong spirit and physique. Conversely, if a weak or elderly man marries a robust woman, they must sleep in separate beds, practice sexual restraint, and use medicines to replenish Essence and Blood. Conception can only occur after menstruation ends, allowing Yang to act and Yin to receive. The resulting child will be vigorous and grow easily. If one does not avoid sexual stimulation, the Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) may move easily; thus, upon erection, even without actual intercourse, a few drops of Ling Jing (spiritual essence) may leak out as the penis flaccidifies. Even if timed with menstruation, what benefit is there? If conception occurs during the phase of strong Yin and misty interaction (Yin-Yang harmonization), although pregnancy may happen, miscarriage is likely. Even if carried to term, the child will likely have less bone and more flesh, inevitably suffering from "Five Delays" (Wu Chi) and "Five Softnesses" (Wu Ruan), making longevity unlikely. As the Classic states: "When Yin is balanced and Yang is secure, Spirit and Mind are regulated." And again: "Harmonizing accordingly is called the supreme standard." How can one fail to rely on tonifying medicines to restore heaven's mandate? Physicians should possess divine insight; do not overlook this lightly.
Zhongzi Dan (Seed-Planting Pill): Treats impotence in men, inability to maintain hardness for long, thin semen leading to infertility. Also treats deficiency in the lower Jiao (Lower Burner) in women, preventing conception. Taking this pill naturally facilitates conception and stabilizes the fetus.
Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (washed with wine, selecting large top branches); Shu Di Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae) (selecting large top branches, steamed nine times and sun-dried nine times in non-ash wine); Tian Dong (Rhizoma Asparagi); Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (both de-heartened; each 3 liang); Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) (12 liang, divided into four parts: one part soaked in wine, one in human milk, one in child's urine, one in salt water, each soaked overnight, then stir-fried until brown); Lu Rong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum) (one pair, weighing 5-6 liang).
All ingredients must avoid iron vessels. Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 80 pills on an empty stomach with salt water or wine. For Lu Rong, select those shaped like eggplants, colored like agate; purple, moist, round, and short ones are superior; those breaking like rotten wood are good. Thin, withered, wrinkled ones with long, forked tips are inferior. Too tender ones lack sufficient Qi and Blood power. Apply suet (animal fat), burn off hair, lightly roast before use. Without suet, the antler is damaged. Do not roast until charred, as it damages its Qi-tonifying nature. Some use wine-roasting, removing the top bone afterwards. Lu Rong should not be smelled, as insects might enter the nose. Lu Rong (Deer Antler) and Mi Rong (Elk Antler) are hard to distinguish. Generally, thick texture, solid brain bone, dark fur mixed with white hairs indicates Mi Rong. Thinner shape, thinner brain bone, yellow lustrous fur without white hairs indicates Lu Rong. Lu Rong tonifies Yang of the Du Meridian; Mi Rong tonifies the Yang within Yin of the Du Meridian; distinction is crucial.
Zhongzi Qi Fang (Miraculous Seed-Planting Formula): For those difficult to conceive, taking this for 100 days, then choosing single-year double-months, double-year single-months, and Yang-days after menstruation to have intercourse, ensures conception, stabilizes the fetus, and prolongs life. Select 70-80% ripe, remove stem, mix with wine, bake dry, powder. Use more for impotence. Avoid Mu Fu Pen [tree-borne, only clears alcohol toxicity], Peng Mei/Dao Huang Mei [tall stem, large purple-black fruit, Autumn Yin, tonifies Yin only, not Yang], She Mei [vine, no thorns, white hairs, red fruit, mild taste, only clears Stomach heat]).

Gao Yiqian said: Tonifying Yang using solely Ginseng, Aconite, etc., to rapidly boost Fire, not only consumes Qi via Excessive Fire, but leads to Yang increasing and Yin decreasing, where Yin cannot match Yang, making longevity and progeny difficult.
