For a woman about to give birth, the pulse exhibits the "Li Jing" (Departing from the Channel) pattern. (Li Jing refers to a pulse rate of six or three beats per respiration cycle. It is also stated that an intermittent pulse is called Li Jing.) This pulse shares the same name as the deep, fine, and slippery pulse (the Kidney pulse being deep and slippery resembles Li Jing). If abdominal pain begins at midnight, delivery should occur then; if it persists until noon the next day, delivery will certainly take place. If the body feels heavy, accompanied by fever and frequent chills, with black and bluish veins under the tongue, tongue retraction, salivation, and a cold sensation in the abdomen, this indicates that the fetus in the abdomen has died. A red face but blue-green tongue, upon careful examination, definitively indicates that the mother is alive while the fetus is dead. If both lips and mouth are blue-green and froth is discharged, it signifies the death of both mother and child. If the face is blue-green while the tongue is red and froth is frequent, it is certain that the mother is dead and the fetus is alive. For a new postpartum woman, a slow and slippery pulse is auspicious, whereas a full, large, wiry, and rapid pulse portends death. A deep and small pulse indicates prosperity, whereas a suddenly firm and solid pulse suggests a short life. A choppy and rapid irregular pulse at the Cun Kou (radial artery) position indicates death, while a deep and fine pulse that remains palpable even when pressed to the bone indicates survival. Good fortune, misfortune, life, and death depend entirely on the pulse; the practitioner must clearly discern the pulse under the fingers.
The *Qimeng* states: For a woman about to give birth, the pulse departs from the channel; one must recognize the departing pulse clearly. The pulse may come in varying sizes and irregular rhythms, resembling the pecking of a sparrow or the leaking of a roof. Lower back pain, abdominal pain, and visual disturbances indicate imminent delivery and are not pathological conditions. The *Mai Jing* states: A uniform and fine pulse facilitates easy delivery; a large, floating, and slow pulse with scattered Qi leads to difficult labor.
When pregnancy reaches the stage of delivery, the lives of mother and child hang in the balance for an instant. Improper regulation can turn safety into danger. Proper care can transform adverse conditions into favorable ones. Therefore, for all syndromes occurring before delivery, treatments should be modified according to the syndrome to protect and regulate the condition until the final month. For first-time mothers who lack experience, panic and fear may lead to errors. Even for experienced mothers, Qi and Blood are depleted; how can they rely on experience without worry? Thus, formulas for protecting childbirth must not be discarded. The *Dasheng San* is suitable for use during the eighth and ninth months of pregnancy, while formulas for nourishing the fetus and *Shenqin Wan* should be used at the time of impending delivery. If the pregnancy exceeds the due date without delivery, formulas for tonifying Blood and moving Qi should not be delayed. Regarding improper living environments, falls that disturb the fetus, excessive comfort, unregulated diet, and emotional instability causing difficult fetal movement, premature rupture of membranes, excessive discharge of amniotic fluid, or fetal drying preventing descent, formulas such as *Baosheng*, *Qianjin Buhuan*, *Wanquan*, *Baoqi*, and *Huatai* are still appropriate and should be selected based on the syndrome. My family's heirloom *Taichan Jindan* is not only the premier miraculous medicine for prenatal and postnatal conditions, but when taken at the time of delivery, it ensures safe and easy birth, surpassing other催产 (labor-inducing) medicines and preventing postnatal complications. Preparing this medicine is vastly superior to others. As for deities, evil spirits, and spells, they cannot be dismissed as entirely false. After conception, the location of "Tai Sha" (fetal killing influences) can harm not only the fetus but also the mother, so caution is required. Securing the environment for safe delivery and storing clothing after birth are also crucial matters. Directions associated with deities like Leigong, Zhaoyao, Yungui Lishi, Tiangou, as well as auspicious directions, and avoiding inauspicious months and positions recorded in previous charts, seem too trivial. Relying strictly on these charts may cause confusion. It is better to adopt the method of borrowing land described by Tixuanzi, which avoids spiritual influences and dispels vulgar doubts. This is recorded below.
*Dasheng San*: Suitable for pregnant women in their eighth or ninth month to take several doses.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zisu (Perillae Folium) (each 5 fen); Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with wine), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, earth-stir-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried with wine) (each 1 qian); Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (3 fen); Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium) (1.5 qian, washed with black soybean juice and dried); Huangyangnao (Huangyang Tree Leaf Tip) (3 pieces); Congbai (Scallion White) (3 stalks). Decoct in water and take orally. In spring, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 5 fen and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 5 fen. In summer, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried with wine) 5 fen, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine) 5 fen, and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) 10 grains. In autumn, add Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 5 fen. In winter, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) 5 fen. Alternatively, generally add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried) and Sharen. For restless fetus, add a small amount of Jinyinbo (Gold Foil), Yezhugen (Artemisia Capillaris Root) 1 qian, and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) 1 qian. For Qi rushing to the heart, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Zisu. For those prone to anger, add stir-fried Huangqin as an adjuvant. For poor appetite, add Sharen and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fried). For thirst, add Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed) and Huangqin. For good appetite, double the dosage of Huangyangnao (this herb thins the fetus; do not use if the fetus is already thin). For phlegm, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, ginger-processed) and Huangqin. Note: Dasheng San is essentially Zisu Yin minus Chuanxiong, plus Huangyangnao and Baizhu. Another variant lacks Danggui, Baishao, and Baizhu.
*Misha Dasheng San*: Take at the eighth or ninth month for easier delivery. Extraordinary effect.
Dafupi (3 qian, washed with black soybean water), Renshen, Zisu (with stem and leaves), Chenpi, Zhigancao, Sharen (each 5 fen), Baizhu (earth-stir-fried), Baishao (wine-stir-fried), Danggui (wine-stir-fried, each 2 qian), Zhike (7 fen, bran-stir-fried). Five stalks of green onion, decoct in water, take before meals. Taking more than ten doses is very effective. I consider this formula more stable and effective than the previous Dasheng San, but Dafupi is light; using 3 qian seems excessive. It would be better to use 1.5 qian as in the previous formula, or increase to 2 qian, making this formula perfect.
*Yangtai San*: Should be used concurrently with *Shenqin Wan*.
Danggui (wine-washed), Chuanxiong, Huangqin, Chenpi, Baizhu (earth-stir-fried), Zhi Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, processed) (each 1 qian), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 3 fen), Renshen (7 fen, double for deficiency). Decoct in water, remove dregs, mix with Yi Yuan San and take. Do not add Yi Yuan San if there is frequent urination near delivery.
*Shenqin Wan*: Take near term for easier delivery. Suitable for those with abundant Qi; contraindicated for those with chronic deficiency.
Ruxiang (Frankincense Resin, 1 liang, transparent pieces ground separately), Zhike (2 liang, bran-stir-fried). Grind into powder, form pills with refined honey, size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills with warm wine every morning.
*Baosheng Wuyou San*: Take at delivery to tonify Blood and smooth Qi, ensuring natural ease of birth.
Danggui (wine-washed), Chuanxiong, Baishao (wine-stir-fried), Zhike (bran-stir-fried), Ruxiang, Muxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Xueyu (Hominis Plasmatis Crinis Carbonisatus). Equal parts, take 2-3 qian, decoct in water, twice daily. Highly effective. Powder form, 3 qian per dose, is also acceptable. Useful for thick placenta and firm attachment to facilitate delivery. Also treats abdominal pain due to blood stasis after miscarriage.
