In the first month, the Fetal Spirit (Tai Shen) resides on the bed in the room. In the second month, it resides by the window. In the third month, it resides in the main hall or doorway area. In the fourth month, it resides by the stove. In the fifth month, it resides on the bed where the mother lies. In the sixth month, it resides in the granary or corner of the bed.
In the seventh month, it resides by the millstone and mortar. In the eighth month, it resides by the side door. In the ninth month, it resides in the anteroom. In the tenth month, it resides in the bedroom. In the eleventh month, it resides by the furnace/stove. In the twelfth month, it returns to the bed in the room. On Zi (Rat) and Chou (Ox) days, it resides in the central hall.
On Yin (Tiger), Mao (Rabbit), Chen (Dragon), and You (Rooster) days, it resides by the stove. On Si (Snake) and Wu (Horse) days, it resides at the door. On Xu (Dog) and Hai (Pig) days, it resides in the room. On Wei (Goat) and Shen (Monkey) days, it resides under the fence.
On Jia-Chen, Yi-Si, Bing-Wu, and Ding-Wei days, it resides in the eastern part of the room. On Geng-Zi, Xin-Chou, and Ren-Yin days, it resides in the southern part of the room. On Liu-Wu and Liu-Ji days (days with Heavenly Stems Wu and Ji), it resides in the northern part of the room.

In odd-numbered months (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th), if birth occurs on a Ren day, it is highly auspicious; clothing should be stored in the Bing position (South). For even-numbered months, if birth occurs on a Jia day, it is highly auspicious; clothing should be stored in the Geng position (West). Another saying states: When storing clothing, one must avoid the Tai Sui direction and the San Sha (Three Killings) direction. It is advisable to use a slightly large, stable porcelain jar, place the placenta inside, and add five types of fruits, such as dates and lotus seeds, with several pieces of each type. The quantity should be odd, symbolizing the intention for the child to have offspring later. The jar containing the placenta should be buried deep in the soil to prevent animals from digging it up. Place it steadily so the fetus is not startled; a larger jar prevents the infant from spitting up milk. Regarding the You Nian Bai Hu Sha Shen (Wandering Year White Tiger Killing God) and other malevolent spirits, directions for childbirth and storing clothing must avoid these; their position is one step backward from the Tai Sui direction. For example, in a Zi year, it is in the Hai position; in a Chou year, it is in the Zi position; others follow this analogy.
Whenever a pregnant woman approaches her due date, select an auspicious day blessed by Tian De (Heavenly Virtue) and Yue De (Monthly Virtue). Have a person skilled in calligraphy fast and purify themselves for three days prior. On the day, draw fresh water and grind cinnabar. Burn incense and write on yellow paper: "Borrow ten steps East, borrow ten steps West, borrow ten steps South, borrow ten steps North, borrow ten steps Up, borrow ten steps Down, totaling over forty steps within the four walls, borrowing land for safe childbirth." If there are any impurities, or if the Gods of the East Sea, West Sea, South Sea, and North Sea reside here, or if the Day Traveling General, Lady Bai Hu, or the stars Xuan Yuan and Zhao Yao are present, please move away ten zhang (approx. 33 meters); raise Xuan Yuan and Zhao Yao ten zhang high; sink Tian Fu and Di Zhou ten zhang into the earth, leaving the land vacant. Let the产妇 (parturient), Ms. [Name], reside and give birth safely, without obstruction, fear, or taboo, protected by all gods, with all evils swiftly departing. So decree. After writing, paste this paper on the wall near where the pregnant woman rests, and no further taboos need be observed.
