The Heart is the official of the sovereign; the Divine Spirit (Shen) emerges from it. The Heart is located below the pulmonary tube and above the diaphragm, attached to the fifth thoracic vertebra of the spine. This meridian (Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian) is characterized by having less blood and more Qi. Its pulse reflects its state. Its glory manifests in the complexion. It opens into the ears, and it is also said to open into the tongue. The *Nanjing* states: "The Heart weighs twelve taels, contains seven orifices and three hairs, and holds three he of essence juice. Its primary function is to store the Spirit." The Heart is pointed and round in shape, resembling a lotus stamen. It has numerous orifices of varying numbers to guide the primordial Qi; there are no perforating orifices at the bottom, but it connects upward to the tongue. There are four ligaments connecting it to pass energy to the other four Zang organs. Outside the Heart is a layer of yellowish-red fat, which is called the Pericardium (Xinbaoluo). Below the Heart is the diaphragm, which attaches circumferentially to the spine and ribs, shielding turbid Qi from ascending to smoke the Heart and Lungs. This is what is referred to as the Danzhong (Sea of Qi). If the dot on the right side of the character "Heart" (Xin) is moved to the lower left, it becomes the character "Fire" (Huo). The Heart governs Fire.
The four other Zang organs are all connected to the Heart. "Heart" implies wakefulness. It means that when Heart Qi is vigorous, one remains alert and can operate the Divine Spirit.

The Small Intestine is the official of reception and transformation; it processes food and separates clear from turbid. The Small Intestine is attached posteriorly to the spine and anteriorly to the umbilicus. It loops upward and to the left, forming sixteen curves. Its diameter is two cun and half, its wall thickness is eight fen and one-third fen, and its length is two zhang and two chi. It can hold two dou and four sheng of grain, and six sheng and two-thirds sheng of water. The upper opening of the Small Intestine is two cun above the umbilicus, near the spine, where water and grain enter. One cun further down, externally attached to the umbilicus, is the Shuifen (SP9, Water Division) acupoint, which corresponds to the lower opening of the Small Intestine. Here, clear and turbid substances are separated: liquid fluids seep into the Bladder, while dregs flow into the Large Intestine. This meridian (Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian) is characterized by having more blood and less Qi. The *Nanjing* states: "The Small Intestine weighs two jin and fourteen taels."
The upper opening of the Small Intestine is the lower opening of the Stomach. The lower opening of the Small Intestine is the upper opening of the Large Intestine, named Lanmen (Gate of the Vermiform Appendix).
