Shuqi San (Shuqi Powder).
The above formula.
Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (Red Halloysite and Hematitum Decoction).
The above formula.
In the Song edition of *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases), the formula for Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang is recorded as "Taiyi Yuyuliang" (Great One Hematitum). This formula should use Yuyuliang (Hematitum). The characters "Taiyi" were added arbitrarily by later generations; detailed explanations can be found in various materia medica works.
Xuanfuhua Daizheshi Tang (Inula Flower and Haematitum Decoction).
The above formula.
Daizheshi (Haematitum) originally from Daizhou was classified as superior grade. Hence it is named Daizheshi, just like Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome). If one obtains material that is red-black with a luster like a rooster's comb, it is suitable for medicinal use, and it need not necessarily come from Daizhou.
Chi Wan (Red Pill).
The above formula; this formula uses Zhenzhu (Cinnabar) for coloring. Hence it is named Chi Wan (Red Pill).
Zhenzhu is Dan Sha (Cinnabar). Dan Sha is Zhusha (Vermilion). Tao Hongjing said: "Ground into powder, it is called Zhenzhu," which is now known as Chen Sha (Chen Cinnabar). Those from Chenzhou are considered excellent. Hence it is named Chen Sha, similar to Daizheshi.
Many physicians fail to distinguish between Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Yin Zhu (Artificial Vermilion), calling both Chen Sha. This often leads to serious errors in treating patients. Yin Zhu originates from mercury and is highly toxic; how can one fail to distinguish it!
Chaihu Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell).
The above formula.
Huang Dan (Lead Tetroxide) is Qiandan (Lead Oxide).
Shechuangzi San (Cnidium Seed Powder) and Zhufu Tang (Pig Skin Decoction).
The above two formulas.
Baifen (White Powder) is Qianfen (Lead Carbonate), now known as Hufen (Hu Powder). *Shiming* states: "Hufen is Hu paste," made by mixing fat and applied to the face. This can be verified under the entry "Fenxi" (Tin Powder) in the materia medica.
Huangtu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction).
The above formula.
Huangtu (Yellow Earth) is earth from the stove hearth.
Danggui Beimu Kushen Wan (Angelica, Fritillaria, and Sophora Pills) and Sanwu Huangqin Tang (Three-Ingredient Scutellaria Decoction).
The above two formulas.
Yelangya Tang (Wild Wolf Tooth Decoction) and Wutou Chishizhi Wan (Aconite and Red Halloysite Pills).
The above two formulas.
Yelangya refers to the herb Yelangya Cao (Wild Wolf Tooth Grass) in the "Grass Section" of the Materia Medica.
Later generations used the teeth of wild wolves to substitute for it, which is incorrect. How could there be any rationale for using the juice of wild wolf teeth to drip onto sores in the yin region?
Puhui San (Reed Ash Powder).
The above formula.
Puhui (Reed Ash) is not seen in various materia medica works. It is likely woven from the reed catkins on the loom; *Bielu* records that practitioners burn it for use. Li Shizhen's *Bencao
