The above seventy-eight substances were used by Zhang Zhongjing in one or two formulas each, so there was no need to specifically investigate their therapeutic indications. For example, Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) is used in Baizhu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Fuzi Jingmi Tang (Aconite and Glutinous Rice Decoction), Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction), and Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) for four conditions; Xiaomai (Wheat) is used in Gancao Xiaomai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction); Xixiaodou (Red Bean) is used in Goudi San (Melon Peduncle Powder); Jiaoyi (Maltose) is used in Da Jianzhong Tang (Major Construct the Middle Decoction) and Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) for two conditions; Jizi Bai (Egg White) is used in Kiju Tang (Vinegar Egg Decoction); Fanshi (Alum) is used in Fanshi Wan (Alum Pill), Xiaoshi Fanshi San (Niter and Alum Powder), and Fanshi Tang (Alum Decoction) for three conditions; Tugua Gen (Trichosanthes Root) is used in Tugua Gen San (Trichosanthes Root Powder); Gansuye (Dried Perilla Leaf) is used in Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction); Guazi and Guaban (Melon Seeds/Pulp) are used in Dahuang Mudan Tang (Rhubarb and Moutan Decoction) and Weijing Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction) for two conditions; Zaojiao (Soap Bean) is used in Zaojiao Wan (Soap Bean Pill) and Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Zaojiao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction without Paeonia plus Soap Bean) for two conditions; Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper) is used in Da Jianzhong Tang (Major Construct the Middle Decoction); Qinpi (Ash Bark), Baitouweng (Pulsatilla), and Zhizi Pi (Gardenia Bark) are used in Baitouweng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction) for two conditions; Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit) and Shuyu (Dioscorea Rhizome) are used in Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). These are all substances tested and proven effective in daily use. Nevertheless, the key lies in how the complete formula is skillfully applied, rather than in extracting the efficacy of individual ingredients one by one; thus, there is no need to specifically investigate their indications. Therefore, Dongdong Weng (Otsuka Jonetsu) largely omitted these seventy-plus substances, except for discussing Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) in formulas. There are seven formulas using this substance. Since it is a staple food for the people, its taste is comparable to brocade, and its efficacy is among the greatest, so it has many merits in treating diseases. Why is it not recorded in Materia Medica? Only Tao Hongjing's *Bielu* (Supplement to Shen Nong's Materia Medica) first recorded the therapeutic functions of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice), stating: "Tonifies Qi, relieves vexation, quenches thirst, stops diarrhea." These are merely four functions. Regarding Zhang Zhongjing's use of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice): The three conditions of Baizhu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) present as severe vexation and thirst, or dryness and vexation on the tongue with a desire to drink several liters of water, or dry mouth and thirst, or desire to drink water with dry mouth and tongue, or painful heat in bone joints. The condition of Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) presents as rebellious qi with nausea. The condition of Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) presents as severe rebellious qi. Severe rebellion means upward reversal of qi; upward reversal inevitably leads to vexation and thirst, and vexation and thirst inevitably lead to dryness on the tongue, indicating that Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) has the function of relieving vexation and quenching thirst. The condition of Taohua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction) presents as diarrhea, or persistent diarrhea. Fuzi Jingmi Tang (Aconite and Glutinous Rice Decoction) can also treat abdominal pain with diarrhea, indicating that Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) has the function of stopping diarrhea. Thus, Tao Hongjing observed these formula conditions and concluded that Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) relieves vexation, quenches thirst, and stops diarrhea. "Tonifying Qi" is Daoist terminology, not the concern of physicians. Modern self-proclaimed ancient formula experts argue that since it is a common food, how can it treat pathogens? This shows they do not understand the efficacy of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice), which is derived from these seven formulas. If Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) is eaten as grain, it is indeed the lifeblood of the common people; if used as medicine, it is sufficient to serve as a major material for treating disease. Just like Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube), when eaten as vegetables/fruits, they nourish nature; when used as medicine, they have great power in treating disease. Although so, Zhang Zhongjing's use of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) has specific indications that cannot be fully known; it is acceptable to leave them unexamined. *Zhouhou Beifang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) has a formula with single Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) to treat sudden abdominal pain. From this, we see that Fuzi Jingmi Tang (Aconite and Glutinous Rice Decoction) treating rumbling and cutting abdominal pain, and Taohua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction) treating diarrhea with abdominal pain, seem to particularly rely on the efficacy of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice). Similarly, Xiaomai (Wheat) treats urgency. As for Baijiu (White Wine), it is commonly brewed by households in China. It spoils easily, so it cannot be stored for long. Our country (Japan) never used Baijiu (White Wine) in beverages! So no one dared to brew it. Even if physicians wanted to store it regularly, if they couldn't brew it frequently, how could they prepare it for emergencies? If they did brew it frequently, the cost would be unbearable. Therefore, when encountering chest bi (obstruction) disease, what role could Baijiu (White Wine) play? This is what my ancient formula experts sigh about! Alas! This is due to the different geographical suitability between Huanghe (China) and our land; we can do nothing about it. If there are others who often try using it, let us wait for future discussions and evidence.
