Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis): The medicinal nature is slightly warm, the taste is bitter, sweet, and pungent. Both qi and flavor are thin. It is non-toxic, ascending, and belongs to Yang. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It stops Ben Tun epilepsy (a condition characterized by gas rushing from the lower abdomen to the chest and heart, accompanied by epilepsy), treats female hernia zhaja (abdominal masses with pain), and cold-dampness bi syndrome of the feet; without this herb, these conditions cannot be cured. For dizziness and vertigo, without this herb, it cannot be eliminated. It is a key herb for treating various wind invasions. When combined with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), it treats damp swelling in both feet. As the Sovereign (Jun) herb combined with Jingqiao (Jingjie/Folium Schizonepetae), it dissipates carbuncle toxins in the lower body. As an Assistant (Zuo) herb combined with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), it stops metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding) with miraculous effect. As a Minister (Chen) herb combined with Chagen (specific root herb), it expels acne toxin with extreme efficacy. It is contraindicated for those with deficient constitution and upward rebellious qi.
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae): The medicinal nature is warm, the taste is sweet and pungent. It is non-toxic, and both qi and flavor are thin. It is ascending and belongs to Yang. It is a key herb for treating pain in the joints throughout the body. Because its qi and flavor can drain qi, and its form and function can treat wind, why is this? Generally, this agent has a warm nature that floats, so it can remove wind-heat at the exterior and also treat stiffness and pain in the limbs and joints. It is generally applicable for treating wind disorders and is suitable for dispersing dampness. It can drive away dizziness and vertigo, and further treat blindness. In Xuming Tang (Preservation of Life Decoction), it is used to eliminate deviation of the mouth and eyes. In Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder), it is used to remove damp-heat throughout the body. Used together with Tiaoqin (Scutellariae Radix), it resolves wind-heat of the Large Intestine. Used together with Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), it disperses wind pathogens of the Lung Meridian. As an Assistant (Zuo) herb combined with Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), it clears wind-heat of the head and eyes effectively. As a Minister (Chen) herb combined with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), it resolves wind-cold of the Taiyang Meridian. Previously, Empress Dowager Wang suffered from a wind disorder that rendered her unable to speak, with a deep pulse; the situation was very critical. If administered as tangible decoctions, it would be too slow to save the matter. Instead, she was instructed to use Fangfeng decocted in water, fumigating until the mist filled the room. Thus, the mouth and nose both received the intangible qi, and the disease healed. Why? Because the human mouth connects to Earth Qi, and the nose connects to Heaven Qi. The mouth nourishes Yin, and the nose nourishes Yang. Heaven governs clarity; therefore, the nose does not receive tangible substances but mostly receives intangible qi. Earth governs turbidity; therefore, the mouth receives tangible substances and also intangible qi.
Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica): The medicinal nature is warm, the taste is pungent and bitter. Both qi and flavor are thin. It is ascending and belongs to Yang. It can cool blood and disperse wind, clearing the head and eyes upwards. It repels evil toxins, unblocks the Five Zang Organs, eliminates fatigue and thirst, unblocks blood vessels, removes damp-bi, breaks stagnant qi, promotes the circulation of blood stasis, releases the muscle layer, and is used for all types of sores, ulcers, and wind-heat. Used together with Qianghuo, it removes blood-dampness. Used together with Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), it disperses wind pathogens. Used together with Honghua (Carthami Flos), it promotes the circulation of bad blood. Used together with Suzi (Perillae Fructus), it directs downward the rebellious qi. Only because its medicinal nature is warm and light, it can open the cou-li (pores). Mixed with vinegar and pounded into a paste, applied to swollen toxins, it heals immediately. It also treats postpartum blood syncope with miraculous effect. Generally, one should stop taking it once the illness is cured; do not overdose. Overdose...
